With its midmounted flat-12 featuring Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection and cutting-edge four-valve architecture, the Testarossa was the world’s most powerful sports car upon its introduction. While demanding few compromises from its occupants for the privilege, the early Testarossa continues to deliver truly blistering performance, even by today’s jaded standards, with acceleration from rest to 60 MPH in just over 5.0 seconds, the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds and a terminal velocity approaching 180 MPH. In fact, the Testarossa triumphantly remained the world’s fastest production car throughout its entire 11-year production run, ending in 1995. Introduced in 1984 at the Paris Motor Show, the replacement for Ferrari’s flagship Berlinetta Boxer 512 polarized onlookers with its edgy styling, which designer Sergio Pininfarina himself described as “an exaggeration in flamboyance.” Such was the impact of Pininfarina’s design—from its wedge-shaped silhouette to its flying side mirrors, distinctive body-side intake strakes feeding twin rear-mounted radiators and ample rear quarters—that it briefly overshadowed the fact that it was also an outstanding redefinition of the grand-touring supercar.
