Chrysler New Yorker, 1955
Chassis No.: N5518267 • Exterior: White/Gold • Interior: White/gold • Designed by Virgil Exner • 331/250 HP Fire Power Hemi V-8 engine • Powerflite automatic transmission • Power steering • Dual exhaust • 1955-exclusive dash-mounted shifter • 120 MPH speedometer • White leather upholstery with Gold fabric inserts • Town and Country pushbutton radio • Chrome wheels • Wide Whitewall tires The cars of the 1950s were all about style and excess: sweeping bodylines, boat loads of chrome and two-tone paint jobs. These rolling works of art—especially in the mid-‘50s—vied for the buying public’s attention with aircraft-inspired styling, compound curved glass and living-room-like interiors. For the first time, engineers took a back seat to automotive designers like Harley Earl and Raymond Lowey, who were now firmly in the driver’s seat. Chrysler, whose sales had lagged with the old-fashioned, boxy designs of the early ‘50s, held an ace up its sleeve—Virgil “Ex” Exner. Premiering his "Forward Look,” Exner lowered the roofline and made the cars sleeker, smoother and more aggressive. With a long hood and short deck, the wedge-like architecture suddenly brought Chrysler to the forefront of design. For 1955, the Chrysler line was brand new from top to bottom and stem to stern, covering three model lines: the Windsor Deluxe, New Yorker Deluxe and the premier of the 300. The C68 New Yorker St. Regis was the top drawer of the two-door hardtops, featuring an upgraded interior and two-tone paint. This ‘55 New Yorker is one of 11,076 built that year and features a Nugget Gold and white paint scheme, wire wheels with wide whitewall tires and the St. Regis interior. Power comes from a 331 CI FirePower Hemi V-8 pushing 250 HP and 340 lb-ft of torque through a dash-shifted Powerflite 2-speed automatic transmission. Power steering and power drum brakes on all four corners help give the 4,340-pound car a near effortless driving experience. Inside, Solex tinted glass helps to keep the St. Regis white leather upholstery with gold fabric inserts cool in summer months, while the optional Town and Country AM radio provides cruising tunes. The jet set design of the interior comes through with the two-spoke, Bakelite steering wheel, chrome control knobs and sectioned gauges. Offsetting the two-tone dash, the passenger side receives a clock and glove box. All that’s needed is you and your other half, heading out for a night on the town. https://www.mecum.com/lots/422851/1955-chrysler-new-yorker/
