Chassis No.: WBADC720900645662 Engine No.: 40533871 Sold £26,880 | Sold The E28 BMW 5-Series, released in September 1981, was BMW’s breakthrough executive saloon. Designed by the iconic BMW designer Claus Luthe, the E28 was initially sold with a combination of four and six-cylinder engines, but in 1984 BMW revealed the very first M5 at the Amsterdam motor show. When it was launched 42 years ago, the new BMW E28 5-Series looked like little more than a facelifted BMW E12 5-Series, a car that had been around since 1972. The E12 had earned itself a fine reputation as a well-made, mid-range saloon that ranged from the 518 to the hot-rodded 528i and M535i. The E28 5-Series range started with the 518, powered by a 90bhp four-cylinder known by its M10 engine code. A 518 with optional five-speed gearbox and power steering was next up the chain, followed by six-cylinder cars, all with five speeds and PAS, with the 125bhp M20 520i and 150bhp M30 525i, plus the 184bhp M30 528i with standard alloy wheels and electric front windows. A three-speed ZF automatic box was optional on all six-cylinder cars as well. The 535i came in two forms, the M535i with the plastic bodykit (bumpers, sills and arch spats) and special metric wheels, plus a metal-bumper version that looked like most other models but had the same special wheels and arch spats. Both models had the Bilstein dampers and M Technic suspension. The M535i was by far the more popular model; the metal bumper version was discontinued but remained available to special order and was renamed 535i SE. This is an exceptional unmolested example of the super cool E28 M535i with the all-important dog leg first gearbox. We are informed the car has led a very gentle life and has been maintained exceptionally well by the fastidious owner while sitting on original old stock E28 M5 wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. The Diamond Black bodywork is beautiful after a significant body restoration costing in excess of £10,000, all the floors are solid and jacking points excellent. The invoices for recent maintenance are endless but include, a new master cylinder, accumulator, bushes, exhaust, shock absorbers, viscous fan, front brake calipers, rear main seal, new control arms, plus much more. Boasting a great specification including electric sunroof, rear head rests, on board computer, head light wash wipe, rear blind and a Blaupunkt Bremen radio to give you the period look but with modern functionality. Present is a great service history with ample service and parts invoices, original dealer plates and the vendor who has owned the car for the last four years assures us it drives faultlessly and is ready to enjoy and impress at any car show. The original full book pack is there with original dealer cards and service book. With an MoT test certificate valid until March 2024, this is a very well ‘sorted’ and exceptionally well presented example of one of the 80’s most iconic cars. This entity will first develop cars exclusively intended for racing, including F2s and Supertouring cars, before creating the first supercar of the Bavarian firm: the M1. This authentic racing car, produced in small series, inaugurated the BMW M. Indeed, in response to the invasion of German tuners, including Alpina, BMW Motorsport will now focus on mass-produced cars. The adventure begins with the M535i E12, produced from 1981 to 1984 with a little more than 3,000 units, and replaced in 1984, with the passage to the new generation of Series 5, by the M535i E28. The formula is rather basic, since the M label only concerns the aesthetics. Specific wheels, wide tyres, aggressive bumpers and rocker panels: the look of the M535i hits the spot. With 218 hp and 310 Nm of torque, the melodious and powerful in-line 6-cylinder engine propels the M535i to 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds, and completes the standing start kilometre in less than 28 seconds. This is a remarkable performance for a saloon car of its time. Thanks to its excellent chassis, the Munich sedan was able to hold off the competition quite easily. With just under 10,000 produced, the M535i is still a difficult model to find in good condition and in its original configuration. Many of these cars have been driven a little too optimistically or suffered from a lack of care. The example we are offering is of Swiss origin and was delivered new by the BMW dealer in Morges, Garage Le Cèdre, in June 1985. This M535i is presented in its original Polaris Metallic colour, with its original TRX tyres, and equipped with its original M-Tech body kit. Without a service book, it’s difficult to follow the car’s history, but it comes to us in very good condition, having recently received a coat of paint, while our test drive revealed an extremely sound car, with no play in the drivetrain, nor suspicious smoke or noise. Alignments are good, the bodywork is sound (there are a few rust spots on the doors and rocker panels, while the rubber spoiler is cracked) and does not seem to bear the slightest trace of impact or accident. Behind the wheel, it’s as exhilarating as ever to drive a 1980s BMW. The five-speed Getrag gearbox (combined with a 25% autoblocker) feels right at home and the inline-six is just begging to be revved up. This M535i comes in its original alpinweiss colour, with the Shadowline finish, and fitted with its original TRX. It is equipped with its M-Tech body kit but also with a rear spoiler most probably original Hartge. The car has never left the Loiret department as shown by its registration 6502 ST 45 which it carried until 2019. At that time, it had only two owners and is now in the hands of the third one, also living in this department. On the day of our test, the odometer read only 163,750 kilometers, which seems to be its original mileage. Indeed, this M535i looks good and the overall look of the car is consistent with what the dashboard indicates. The alignments are perfect, the body is sound and doesn't seem to bear the slightest trace of a collision or accident. This is a particularly well-preserved car with a known history. Behind the wheel, getting behind the wheel of an 80s BMW is as exhilarating as ever. The 5-speed Getrag gearbox (combined with a 25% limited-slip gearbox) is perfectly within reach and the inline six is just begging to climb the towers. Extra.
