In 1962, British manufacturer Triumph unveiled a new, small-displacement sports car at the London Auto Show that was intended to compete with Austin-Healey’s immensely popular Sprite. This new sports car was dubbed the Spitfire and featured a 1147cc inline 4-cylinder engine that was tucked within a body designed by Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti mounted on a modified Triumph Herald frame. The immediate success of the Spitfire resulted in it ultimately evolving through five distinct generations over the ensuing 20 years, with approximately 315,000 examples being produced throughout its run.
The example on offer is a fifth-generation 1980 Triumph Spitfire 1500 Convertible and the ultimate iteration of the Spitfire line. Finished in traditional British Racing Green over a tan interior, this beautiful Spitfire was formerly part of the Grant Miller Collection and registers just 257 miles on the odometer. It’s equipped with the largest-sized motor of the Spitfire line, with its 1.5L inline 4-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission.
It’s fitted with a black convertible top, factory steel wheels and a rear deck luggage rack, and on the inside this Spitfire features a wood-grain dash with Smiths instrumentation, a center armrest, a sport-style steering wheel and an AM/FM radio. Offered with an owner’s manual, this 1980 Triumph Spitfire 1500 Convertible is a wonderful example of the car Triumph designed to contend with Austin-Healey’s Sprite.
