Recalling one of the earliest and most legendary of Rolls-Royce’s ethereal model names, the Phantom debuted in 2004 as the storied British marque’s first all-new model in nearly 40 years. While obviously an incredibly well equipped and ultra-luxurious sedan with a grand presence to match, the Phantom also delivers startling performance with a factory-rated 453 HP on tap. Designed by BMW, the corporate parent of Rolls-Royce, the Phantom’s V-12 powerplant is an engineering tour de force with all-aluminum construction, direct fuel injection, dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing.
Generating massive torque, 531 lb-ft with the majority available at just 1,000 RPM, the Phantom is capable of accelerating from rest to 60 MPH in just 5.7 seconds. However, in deference to its intended elite-level market, Rolls-Royce equipped the Phantom with a special two-phase exhaust system, incorporating a device to shut a valve at low RPM and reducing exhaust noise to insignificant levels. Handling that power is a 6-speed automatic transmission, traction control, air springs at all four corners and automatic level control, plus the security of 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with ABS.
Captivating in its black exterior finish and wood-trimmed tan Connolly leather interior, this 2004 Rolls-Royce Phantom is a fine example.
