Truly great design never grows old. Rolls-Royce’s Corniche Drophead Coupe was introduced in 1970 as a convertible variant of the popular Silver Shadow, and it would remain in production for a remarkable 25 years. Each was built to individual customer order at Rolls-Royce’s Mulliner Park Ward coachworks in London, taking over a month to handcraft to magnificent standards. Only the finest Connolly leather was used within, and the top alone was crafted so perfectly that it fit like the roof of a coupe.
Not just long-lived, the Corniche Drophead Coupe was also as desirable at the end of those 25 years as it was at the beginning. It was a magnificent rolling status symbol, signifying its owner’s superb taste and success, which allowed him to enjoy the greater things in life.
According to the owner of this lovely Corniche, it was acquired by him from the original owner, who was the president of a Swiss bank! Documentation from the Rolls-Royce Foundation, copies of which are on file, indicate that it was originally finished as it appears today, in Deep Ocean with a Beige interior piped in Blue and a Beige top. Interestingly, the car was also originally specified with cocktail cabinets built into both doors. It presently shows 50,156 miles, which are in keeping with the condition of the Corniche and believed original. The original Blaupunkt radio is still fitted, along with a more recent Sony unit, and the original Jaeger gauges and walnut dashboard still show well.
Following inspection and sorting, this Corniche will be an elegant tourer, with its unusually attractive colors, and it would be an excellent choice for the collector looking for an ideal automobile for Palm Beach or St. Tropez.
