As the 911 evolved, so did the concept of a Targa roof, making its last appearance as a sliding glass roof on a very limited number of 933 generation cars. A modified version of this configuration, now incorporating a glass hatch, was seen on 997 Targas from 2007.
The Targa top came full circle in 2015 with the 991, marking a welcome return to the original concept, including a domed rear window, prominent basket handle roof bar, and a familiar, though now fully automatic, solid, removable roof panel.
This same setup remains optional on today's stunning 992 generation of 911's, endowing the world's most imminently usable junior league supercar with even greater versatility.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This thoughtfully specified 992 Targa 4S looks thoroughly menacing in monochromatic black on black over optional 911 Turbo wheels. Equipped with nearly $30,000 in options, the car is offered with fewer than 250 delivery-only miles from date of manufacture, and presents throughout as a brand-new car.
Exterior options include staggered 20" front, 21" rear 911 Turbo wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps, fully color-matched, power folding mirrors, rear model designation delete, and as part of the desirable Sport Package, a sport exhaust system with silver-tipped outlets.
As previously noted, the 992 Targa system incorporates fully electric operation, in which the rear glass dome opens to accept the automatically stowed roof panel. Reversing this cycle refits the Targa panel.
The car's low, aggressive stance looks fantastic, and an optional front axle lift minimizes compromise by assisting in clearance of atypically steep driveways or ramp curbs.
Inside, ventilated, adaptive, 18-way Sport Seats with memory are covered in matching black leather, and the steering wheel is a heated rim GT Sport item. The car's sought-after Sport Chrono Pack, incorporated as standard within the Sport Package, includes a dash-top clock/lap timer, launch control, Sports Plus mode, and much more. Most 911 enthusiasts consider the Chrono Pack a must-have option, and for good reason.
Porsche's launch control is arguably among the best in the business, and on the Targa 4S allows 0-60 mph times as low as three seconds flat. Sports Plus mode endows the already-razor-sharp 992 with snappier throttle response and more aggressive PDK shift mapping, among others.
The auction car's nearly $7,000 Premium Package includes Remote ParkAssist, and Night Vision Assist is another noteworthy extra.
Power is provided by a twin-turbocharged, 3.0 liter, liquid-cooled boxer six-cylinder producing 443 hp, a full 64 more than standard, non-S Targa 4 models. The '4' in both models designates all-wheel drive, a sophisticated and effective system enabling all-weather security and incredible traction during acceleration. Top speed is 180 mph.
A 7-speed manual transaxle is available as a no-cost option on 4S models, however the standard 8-speed dual-clutch PDK fitted to the auction car offers the best of both worlds, combining fully automatic operation with the option of lightning-quick, manually controlled gearchanges.
