Porsche and Brumos Racing once again reached back into their shared history to create this fabulous Porsche 911 Carrera GTS. Dubbed the B59 Edition, it is one of the last five production-997 Porsches built, all specially prepared by Porsche to commemorate longtime Brumos Racing president Hurley Haywood’s spectacular racing career, most notably his record fifth and final Daytona 24 Hours win in 1991. Haywood is certainly worthy of such an honor. His racing career began serendipitously in 1968 when he was running his street Corvette in a Jacksonville, Florida, autocross event.
Brumos Racing president Peter Gregg arrived with his transporter carrying a full-race 911, which he tested on the autocross circuit. Haywood beat Gregg’s time, attracting his attention and sparking a friendship that would last until Gregg’s untimely death in 1980. In their first race together at Watkins Glen in 1969, Haywood beat a field of Corvettes in his Brumos-prepared 911S. After serving in Vietnam, Haywood returned to win the 1971 and 1972 IMSA GT championships.
Driving Porsches almost exclusively through to the mid-1990s, Haywood amassed a record that has firmly established him as one of the most decorated endurance drivers in the history of motorsports, with a record that includes three wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, two in the Sebring 12 Hours and a record-tying five in the 24 Hours of Daytona. One of the last five 997-model production Porsches, this Porsche GTS B59 Edition pays homage to Haywood’s amazing record of overall wins at Daytona with a unique package of special features highlighted by its Brumos Racing livery combining Carrera white with blue and red striping.
Black racing mirrors and 19-inch Sport Classic Fuchs-style wheels complete the car’s racy exterior treatment. The Black full-leather interior is trimmed with Alcantara and blue and red dual-stripe stitching accents on the steering wheel rim, shifter boot and brake handle. Carrera white paint is also used on the console and the backs of the special heated memory Adaptive Sport Seats, the latter also incorporating Guards Red seat belts. The Sports Chrono Package Plus is accompanied inside by a Bose sound system, navigation, XM satellite radio receiver and special stainless-steel door entry guards engraved with Haywood’s signature.
On the performance side, this B59 Edition teams the potent 3.8/408 HP flat-6 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, Sports Suspension including PASM and limited-slip rear differential and Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes. Every special-edition Porsche is a genuine treasure, and Porsche certainly outdid itself in creating the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS B59 Edition.
