This 2016 Porsche 911 R sports only 180 original miles and has an eye-watering $60,000 in options that include such features as a custom-tailored interior, front-axle lift, Sport Chrono package and a Bose sound system. The 911 R is a wicked machine equipped with the 4.0L/500 HP direct-fuel-injected engine directly sourced from the 911 GT3 RS. The carbon-ceramic 4-wheel disc brakes are also shared with the 2016 GT3 RS. However, beyond these two mechanical common denominators, the two cars are very divergent in personality.
Where the GT3 RS is an absolute extrovert that relies on advanced aerodynamics and uber sophistication, the 911 R is the embodiment of stark simplicity and minimalism, giving it an understated presence but packing stunning performance attributes. The 911 R is the spiritual successor to the 1967 911 R, Porsche’s first purpose-built 911-based race car. It weighed in at 350 pounds less than a stock 911 and was fitted with a 2.0L twin-plug engine pulled from the 906 race car. The original 911 R equation is so simple: less weight plus more horsepower equals one fast car.
The 911 R subscribes to this same ethos, as it is a significant 110 pounds lighter than the GT3 RS and has less aerodynamic drag as a result of being built on the narrow-body 911 shell. Other weight-saving measures include a lightweight magnesium roof skin, carbon-fiber front fenders and 20-inch alloy wheels. The 911 R came with a specially built 6-speed manual gearbox and forgoes flashy aerodynamic appendages. With a total production run of only 991 units, owners of the Porsche 918 Spyder were given the first right of refusal for purchase of a 911 R.
Rarely seen on either the private sales and auction scenes, one can safely assume that many 911 R still share the same garage space with a 918 Spyder.
