Porsche has always made driver involvement a paramount consideration in engineering the 911 in all its many incarnations, and, in 2016, the company rolled out one of the purest, most driver-oriented 911s in the company’s history: the 911 R. No. 959 of 991 produced worldwide, the example offered here from the Michael Fux Collection remains in pristine, factory condition, showing just 60 miles of enjoyment. This car was originally built for a Porsche executive but after Mr. Fux’s 911 R order was lost, the factory reallocated this car to Mr. Fux.
Its white paint, special blue stripes and black-painted GT3 center-lock wheels, just a few of the custom touches performed by Porsche’s Special Wishes Custom Tailoring service, pay homage to early factory racing Porsches, but the interior is anything but competition spartan. This one-of-a-kind car is the only 911 R with 18-way power seats. Taut black leather covers practically every surface, all with contrasting GT silver stitching that is also used on the leather-edged carbon fiber floor mats.
Porsche’s outstanding Sport Chrono Package, air conditioning, a Bose Surround Sound System with HD radio receiver, power seats, navigation and illuminated carbon fiber doorsill guards add more functionality and convenience. The 911 R’s primary mission is as a performance Porsche honed to the finest edge, a task that begins with dropping the GT3’s free-revving 4.0L/500 HP naturally aspirated flat-6 engine into the R’s tail and connecting it to a special 6-speed manual gearbox exclusive to the 911 R via a reinforced clutch and optional single-mass flywheel that makes throttle response pop like that of a GT3 Cup racer.
The GT3 also contributed the 911 R’s Active Suspension Management system, Ceramic Composite Brakes (here with yellow calipers), rear axle steering and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Because shaving weight was also part of the design team’s mandate, it turned to the GT3 for the 911 R’s lightweight carbon fiber hood and front fenders, additionally sourcing its smoothly sculpted magnesium roof panel from the GT3 RS. An extended-range fuel tank, aluminum-look fuel filler cap, LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System, front axle lift and Sport Design auto-dimming mirrors with rain sensors and carbon fiber trim complete this fabulous 911 R.
