By the time of the introduction of 1933’s 10th Series, Packard remained the choice of American aristocracy yet was beginning to incorporate welcome hints of flash and dash into its lines. The year’s models incorporated classically swept fender lines, but now the fenders were skirted, neatly hiding the mechanical components beneath. A graceful vee’d radiator shell hinted at the power flexed by the top-of-the-line V-12, now in its second season, built on a new tapered frame, and featuring such mechanical refinements as a single dry-plate clutch and automatic choke.
The car offered here is, by its body number, the fifth Twelve coupe roadster produced for 1933’s Tenth Series. Its vehicle tag on the firewall, which is original, confirms its identity as an authentic and correct coupe roadster, delivered by Earle C. Anthony’s famous Los Angeles dealership on 14 February 1933 (Happy Valentine’s Day!). Further, both the chassis and engine are numbered very close to one another, indicating that this car, indeed, retains its original body, engine, and chassis, as they were sold new.
Well-known Arizona businessman and automobile collector Bob Larrabee purchased the car in 1971 from Malvern Holdings of London, England, apparently returning it to the U.S. after some years’ absence. It remained with Mr. Larrabee until 2006, and was much enjoyed, including participation for many years in CCCA Arizona Region activities. In 1984, Mr. Larrabee and his friend Neil DeAtley participated with the Packard in the second edition of the cross-country Great Race. After the race it was fully restored to its present appearance, and has been extremely well maintained since, including, since 2006, in Mr. DeAtley’s own wonderful collection.
The coupe roadster is among the most desirable of Packard Twelves, and it is rare indeed to find a Tenth Series example as well kept and enjoyed as that offered here. It would be a fantastic addition to any Full Classic stable – or an ideal Valentine’s Day present, which – who knows? – may just be keeping a tradition.
