By the time the 10th Series was introduced in 1933, Packard remained the choice of American aristocracy, yet was beginning to incorporate welcome hints of flash and dash into its lines. The year’s models incorporated classically swept fender lines, while a graceful, vee-shaped radiator shell hinted at the power flexed by the top-of-the-line V-12, now in its second season. The vaunted engine rode on a new, tapered, X-braced frame and featured such mechanical refinements as a single dry-plate clutch, dual coil ignition, and automatic choke. Inside, a new aircraft-inspired dash and upgraded trim were added.
Riding on a 142-inch wheelbase, the Twelve was offered in 13 individual body styles with none more attuned to coachwork fashions of the times than the Raymond Dietrich-designed Convertible Victoria. A true all-weather design, the luxurious five-passenger convertible cost more than a Packard limousine when new and as such was reserved for a precious few. It is believed that only six authentic examples remain in existence.
Wearing a stunning older restoration, one of those six is now being offered here for the first time in over three decades. It was acquired by the current owners in 1990 from longtime enthusiast Dr. Claude L. Pressler of Ohio, its owner since at least 1973, and subsequently restored by Stan Uher of Classic Coachworks in Blenheim, Ontario. Cloaked in the wonderful period shade of Oyster Gray with dark gray belt and fender lines over oxblood leather trim, this Convertible Victoria wears numerous desirable features, including chromed wire wheels shod in wide whitewall tires, dual side-mounted spare tires with covers and mirrors, cormorant radiator mascot, and, most notably, twin Pilot-Ray driving lights, which turn in congruence with the front wheels.
Craved by collectors the world over as among the ultimate Full Classics, the Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria is a hallmark of American automotive styling. This example, with its gorgeous period color scheme and desirable appointments, is sure to demand the attention of all those fortunate enough to find themselves in its presence.
