In 1900 a new company, the Ohio Automobile Company, was formally established with production that year reaching 49 motorcars. The Model B of that year followed very much the pattern of the 1899 prototypes with a conventional single-cylinder, four-stroke engine driving through a planetary transmission system, with final drive by chain. Packard's automatic ignition advance was years ahead of its time and along with the H-pattern gearshift was a feature later adopted across the industry. The seal of approval for the new models was the patronage of no less than William D. Rockefeller who ordered his new car at the New York Automobile Show late in 1900, switching allegiance from Winton—that must have given J.W. and W.D. a great deal of pleasure!

Engine size was progressively increased and in 1902 the first twin cylinder Packard, the Model G, was built in Warren – it was not deemed a success, only four were built. Packard had the business acumen to recognize his mistakes and move on quickly, resulting in the announcement of the first four-cylinder car, the Model K, in the Fall of 1902. Now the Packard brothers were really motoring and that same year the Packard Motor Car Company was established, a new factory being set up in Detroit in 1903.

Recognizing the value of participation in motor sport, the new four-cylinder cars were entered in competition, designer Charles Schmidt taking the wheel himself and driving to a creditable fourth place in the first Vanderbilt Cup race in 1904 and at Daytona achieving a remarkable 77.6 mph mile record.

Packard sales escalated on the back of the publicity generated and by 1904 annual production exceeded 200 units for the first time. 1904 models displaced 241.7 cu.in., the 1905 models being just slightly bigger at 265.7 cu.in., but it was in 1906 that massive strides forward were made with the Model S (otherwise known as the Model 24) which feature for the first time a 'T' configuration cylinder head and magneto jump spark ignition.

The Model Thirty was a development of that Model S, the highly efficient T-head engine now displacing 431.9 cu.in. and developing a purposeful 30bhp, helped by the larger valves now fitted. The more formal touring car and the limousine and landaulette model were assembled on the longer 122in. wheelbase chassis, while the distinctly sporting Runabout with two passenger seating was built on the shorter 108 in. wheelbase chassis. In total some 1,128 Model Thirty (U series) cars left the Detroit works that first year.

This set the tone for a wonderful five year run of the model, which peaked at sales/production of 2,493 units in 1910, climbing gently down to 1,865 units in 1911, before the arrival of their six-cylinder cars curtailed the Model.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

This exceptional Model 30 UD from 1911 is a text book example of the model. In Beverly Rae Kimes reference work you will find the descriptive references to paint finishes to be: 'body and door panels Packard blue striped with Packard gray; underbody, hood, radiator, frame, fenders, battery and tool boxes and moldings black; wheels, axles, springs, other running gear Packard gray striped with black'. Close examination of the car today reveals exactly those color finishes and for the running gear itself, they are almost certainly the original factory finishes, a remarkable find in a 111 year old car!

It was the extraordinary condition of the car that drew Mr. Schaevitz to this Model 30, and that state of preservation can be attributed to the succinct chain of just four custodians in its career of more than a century.

The car was originally supplied new to a Dr. Haymes of Oriskany, New York in 1911 and was kept by him long after its natural life of service right up until after the war, when in 1948 it passed through Pry Brothers dealers to Walter Myers of Bridgewater, NY. Photos in the file of the car in the immediate post war era show it to be virtually untouched and still wearing its period New York plates. Mr. Myers kept the Model 30 for the next 30 years, displaying it in his museum at Bridgewater for some time. In 1978 it became the property of Ronald Hall of Sharon Springs, NY, and Mr. Hall's tenure lasted until 1991, when Mr. Schaevitz prized it away from him.

Mr. Schaevitz elected to give the then 80-year-old Packard a 'birthday' and commenced a sympathetic refurbishment. In doing so, only the exterior of the bodywork was repainted in the correct factory Packard tones, leaving the original wood finishes on the interior of the body. The main tub of the body was completely retrimmed by well-respected upholsterer, Leif Drexler, and complete new top was fitted also all in high quality materials matching that of the original.

Comprehensively equipped, including many tools in its running board tool-box, dashboard instrumentation and lighting, this is a well presented car that attests to the quality of the product offered by Packard in these years from running gear to coachwork and accessories. After a number of years of inactivity, the Model 30 has recently been professionally detailed, as well as checked over and brought back to life. It is reported to be running nicely once again and performing well.
