The debut of Packard’s straight eight-cylinder engine marked the dawn of a new era for the esteemed American car manufacturer. In designing the new powerplant, Packard Chief Engineer Jesse Gurney Vincent and his team had created a powerful, durable and nearly vibration-free engine which came to represent a high-water mark in American automotive design.
At the top of the Packard lineup for 1930 was the Seventh Series Custom and Deluxe Eights. Enterprising buyers had the choice of either a 140.5- or 145.5-inch wheelbase and 22 total body configurations. Power came from Packard’s vaunted 385-cubic-inch straight-eight rated at 106 horsepower. For 1930, the enormous engine was updated with a Detroit Lubricator updraft carburetor, dual fan belts, and mated to a four-speed sliding-gear manual transmission. Non-shatter safety glass also appeared for the first time on all windows.
Offered from a private collection and spanning a 140.5 inch wheelbase, the Custom Eight Packard on sale here is said to have benefitted from a recent full restoration. Wrapped in luxurious Convertible Coupe coachwork, the car is cloaked in the stunning period colors of maroon with black fenders and beltline over an all-new dark red leather interior. The black fabric convertible top is wonderfully accentuated by twin polished Landau bars, while matching maroon disc wheels shod in Firestone wide whitewall tires bring the impressive presentation to the road. Optional dual side-mounted spares with accessory mirrors, along with Trippe driving lights and a Goddess of Speed radiator mascot continue the car’s list of desirable accoutrements.
