When Mercedes-Benz performance works AMG began developing the 2016 GT S, it focused on evolution rather than revolution. The second bespoke automobile from AMG, the GT S shares some of its design with the preceding SLS and, as is often the case with Mercedes-Benz, draws on that company’s great racing heritage, but it was also distinctly suited to its role as the incoming flagship. Built on an aluminum space frame, it’s a more efficiently packaged car than the SLS, drawing its various systems into closer proximity for improved weight distribution and lower polar moment.
The GT S gets its considerable power from a beautifully designed 4.0L all-aluminum V-8 churning out 503 HP at 6,250 RPM and 479 lb-ft of torque from 1,750 up to 4,750 RPM. The first production sports car V-8 to combine “Inside V” twin turbochargers with dry-sump lubrication, the AMG’s hand-built engine is teamed with a 7-speed automatic dual-clutch rear transaxle with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. AMG’s multimode Dynamic Select ride system offers an impressive array of driving modes to handle virtually any road conditions.
A new Individual mode allows individual tailoring of engine, transmission, damping and other settings, and an additional Race mode tightens up engine response and shifting characteristics to better suit the track day outings that the GT S makes irresistible. Dynamic Select also adjusts steering response according to input and the chosen driving mode. Double-wishbone suspension with AMG Ride Control, 4-wheel disc brakes with huge drilled and slotted rotors clamped by red AMG calipers, Continental radials on lightweight black forged cross-spoke wheels and an active rear wing ensure handling and braking that defy expectations.
