The second offering in McLaren’s planned Super Series of revolutionary hypercars and the successor to the marvelous 650S, the 720S Luxury Launch Edition owes its sleek lines, tapered canopy and ominous countenance to the world’s most efficient hunting machine: the Great White Shark.
In keeping with its mission to push every boundary of design and performance, McLaren based the 720S on its innovative carbon fiber Monocage II passenger capsule combining high strength, low weight and unrivaled rigidity for maximum protection and exceptional chassis dynamics. The Monocage II’s roof section extends over the extruded rear aluminum subframe, allowing wider-opening dihedral doors and excellent overall vision through upper door panels fitted with the same Gorilla Glass used on the ubiquitous iPhone and many other heavy-duty applications.
Pressing the start button produces a fearsome bark from the 720S’ M840T twin-turbocharged, dry-sump V-8 engine—a highly refined all-alloy device displacing 4.0L and generating the 720 PS (710 HP) that inspired the 720S moniker. Working through a sophisticated 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, the M840T engine literally launches the 720S to 212 MPH at its 7,000 RPM redline.
McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control System II is but one component in an array of technologies controlling the 720S’ superb handling, including launch control, McLaren Adaptive Damping with comfort, sport and track modes, carbon ceramic disc brakes and Pirelli P Zero tires on S-spec twin-spoke lightweight forged alloy wheels.
