Succeeding the 650S, the McLaren 720S debuted at the 2017 Geneva Salon as the second offering in its maker’s Super Series. Built from a competition-type central “tub” structure based on that of the P1 Hypercar, the 720S nonetheless marked a nearly complete departure from the 650S in several key areas. Powering the 720S is McLaren’s proprietary twin-turbocharged V-8, updated with a longer stroke for a slight displacement increase and fitted with advanced new twin-scroll turbochargers. Designated M840T, this powerplant develops 710 HP and 568 lb-ft of peak torque, paired with McLaren’s automatic transmission.
Ferocious performance includes zero to 60 MPH acceleration in 2.8 seconds and 215 MPH flat out. Updated bodywork was influenced by the P1 and retained the company’s signature vertical-dihedral doors. The deceptively luxurious 720S interior included supportive, competition-type bucket seats, Alcantara and Weir leather upholstery, carbon-fiber trim, and Bowers & Wilkins premium audio. In its January 2018 report, MotorTrend testers were shocked by the performance of the 720S, declaring it was tied for the third-fastest car the magazine had ever tested, besting even the vaunted Porsche 918.
MotorTrend Associate Editor Scott Evans’ comments on the experience were particularly telling and entertaining: “Life begins at 70 MPH. Stuff gets real at 100 MPH. The holy stuffing happens in the middle of third. When fourth hits, the world outside blurs. You almost get tunnel vision; it’s like a sci-fi warp effect the scenery blurs so quickly.” A two-owner car showing just 3,886 miles on the odometer, this 2018 McLaren 720S carried an original MSRP of $366,762.
Features and options are many, including Exterior Carbon Fiber Packages 1 and 2, the Performance Package, Vehicle Lift System, a black Alcantara interior with orange accents, McLaren Orange brake calipers, the Interior Carbon Fiber Trim Package, clear European side markers, black powder-coated wheels, carbon ceramic brakes, Sports Exhaust and a 12-speaker audio system. A recent service included installation of new accumulators and an inlet pipe by McMedics in October 2023. Paint and glass are protected by XPEL Stealth exterior PPF, XPEL Prime-XR window film throughout and Glanz interior and exterior ceramic coating. Accompanying this iconic supercar icon are service records and booklets.
