Following the successful reception of the all-new Land Rover Discovery in 1989, it was decided to give the traditional Land Rover its own name: Defender. Now boasting bold 'Defender' logos, the Land Rover continued its seemingly inexorable process of development, gaining disc brakes and power assisted steering as standard during the 1990s together with a host of other improvements. Despite, or perhaps because of, being recognisable related to the very first Land Rover of 1948, the Defender retained a steadfastly loyal customer base; indeed, in the UK in 2013 it even managed to out-sell the Range Rover. Improvements would continue to be made regularly until production of the traditional Land Rover Defender ceased at the end of January 2016.
The vehicle offered here is a 2016-registered Land Rover 110 XS Utility Wagon finished in Corris Grey with black leather/fabric interior and equipped with the optional carpets and privacy glass. It was built on 20th January 2016 and the vendor (its sole owner) was there to watch it as it went down the production line (photographs available). While at the production line the vendor got some of the staff to sign parts of it while they were being fitted. These staff stopped work on that line nine days later and the plant closed.
This vehicle has never been on the road. It has covered only some 20 miles and been kept in dry storage since it was delivered to the present owner in early 2016. In October 2021 the Defender was retrieved from storage; re-commissioned and serviced, it comes with a current MoT (expiring June 2023).
This particular Land Rover Defender is special for many reasons, not least because it was photographed on the production line but also because of the signatures of the assembly staff. Original and unmarked, this historic Defender deserves to be in a collection.
