Launched in October 1961, the Jaguar Mark X had been developed to suit the North American market and was a large car by European standards. "The Mark X is longer, lower and wider than its predecessor; its appearance once again bears witness to the outstanding flair of Sir William Lyons for elegance of line..." declared Motor magazine, while the journal Motor Racing observed: "Superb styling once again has been achieved on a Jaguar saloon without sacrificing passenger room." Jaguar's top-of-the-range model, the Mark X was technically more advanced than preceding Jaguar saloons and featured independent rear suspension similar to that of the E-Type sports car.
The same unit as that fitted to the contemporary E-Type, its engine was the tried-and-tested 3.8-litre XK six producing 265bhp on triple SU carburettors, and for a car weighing around two tons the 120mph Mark X was impressively quick, though inevitably the weight took its toll of the fuel consumption. The interior, like that of all Jaguar saloons, was exceptionally well appointed and comfortable, and the Mark X came with power-assisted steering as standard. By the time the face-lifted 420G version came along in 1966, the Mark X was being built with 4.2-litre engine and (optional) all-synchromesh gearbox, while incorporating numerous other improvements.
Copies of registration papers and other documents on file suggest that this Mark X was first registered in Switzerland on 14th December 1967. Its first owner may have been Mr Jacques Bercher, as there are documents in his name present. In more recent years the Jaguar has been resident in Croatia (the associated sales receipt is dated December 2004 and the Croatian title was issued in 2010). While in Croatia the Mark X was extensively restored (see invoices for parts, work-in-progress photographs, and a list of restoration works carried out on file). The current vendor purchased the Jaguar on 28th February 2019 from D&M VIP Leasing GmbH of Kufstein, Austria.
The purchase invoice is available and the car also comes with a British Leyland Swiss dealers list; Jaguar 420G Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook; radio manual; original document wallet; and various other items of paperwork. Please note this motor car is subject to import tax if remaining in the EU and, as it has been on static display for a number of years, will require recommissioning for road use. This motor car will be sold with its original Croatian title, its original service notebook and different pictures and invoices from its latest restoration.
