When Tornado Sports Cars Ltd. of England set out to build a show car to tour the U.S., it elected to replicate Ford GT40 Chassis No. P/1027, itself being an exhibition car if ever there was one. P/1027 was built to production racing specifications but finished in Belgian Racing Yellow for display from new at the Brussels Motor Show in February 1966. Interestingly, only P/1027, P/1018 and P/1020 were built with a dual identity setup of race-and-show. After the Belgian show, P/1027 was ushered off to Ford Division and then leased to M.G.M.
Studios, through which it would see use at Monaco, Brands Hatch, Watkins Glen and Sebring in the filming of “Grand Prix,” with the car sneaking into the film in its Cirrus White with blue sill stripes livery in a brief overhead shot taken at Monaco. Throughout the 1966 Formula 1 season, the car was used to gather racing footage at European circuits, with the nose and rear bodywork removed to accommodate the camera systems. The car was purchased by Charles Sechan in 1967, and from there, P/1027 passed through a series of collectors and enthusiasts who painted and repainted the car, as well as swapped out the engine a few times.
With an extraordinarily well-documented lifespan, P/1027 was a great example to base a replica on. Presenting in a right-hand drive configuration, Tornado Sports Cars Chassis No. 875 features a 289 CI V-8 engine built by Precision Automotive in Simsbury, Connecticut, that is rated at 375 HP and 355 lb-ft of torque. The engine is fitted with a Holman Moody C30Z cam, C/R & Eddie heads and Weber 44 IDF carburetors, and a manual transmission channels the power to the 15-inch silver knock-off wheels.
Completed in 2008, the Tornado replica was finished in yellow with a black racing stripe and side stripes, and the interior features the gauges and toggle switches needed to look the part of a Ford GT40 MkII racer.
