At midyear 1962, Ford fired two volleys into America’s sizzling muscle car wars as part of its new Total Performance campaign. To counter Chevrolet’s Super Stock option for the Impala with its available 409, Ford introduced a sporty 500XL package for the Galaxie with bucket seats, a full-length console and special trim. The sales brochure explained that XL stood for “Extra Lively,” but it was also the perfect platform for Ford’s other midyear surprise—the 406 CI V-8, available as a 406/385 HP High Performance with single Holley 4-barrel or 405 HP Super High Performance topped by an aluminum intake manifold with a trio of Holley 2-barrels.
This triple-black G-code 1963 Galaxie convertible was factory-equipped with both, providing it with the 406 tri-power muscle to back up its sporting 500XL image. Additional equipment includes a 4-speed manual transmission with optional floor shifter, AM/FM radio and Firestone tires on painted steel wheels with Ford small-diameter hubcaps. An upgrade from the previous 390 big-block, the 406 resulted from a .080-inch overbore, but the larger FE was also enhanced by a stronger block, solid-lifter camshaft, heavy-duty connecting rods, larger valves and high-flow exhaust manifolds. For normal driving, the 406 Super High Performance’s 6V carburetion operated on the center 330 CFM 2-barrel.
But with the pedal to the floor, the progressive linkage opened a pair of outboard 2-barrels rated at 350 CFM each for a 1,030 CFM rush of acceleration and full-throated sound. The 406 package also included heavy-duty suspension, fade-resistant drum brakes, a higher-capacity radiator and 15-inch wheels. Along with bucket seats and a console, the 500XL package added “bucket-styled” rear seat upholstery, Mylar interior trim and chrome ribbed exterior molding. With its 500XL and checkered-flag 406 emblems on the front fenders, this Galaxie convertible was restored in its factory-correct Raven Black on Black color combination and represents the best of Ford Total Performance for early 1963.
