Offered with just 7,482 kilometers (a mere 4,649 miles), this European-delivery 1988 Ferrari Testarossa is a reference-grade example of the car that replaced the exceptional 512 Berlinetta Boxer as Ferrari’s flagship 12-cylinder grand tourer. The Testarossa was much more than the 512’s successor; it was a better car in almost every way and, unlike the 512, it could be had for sale in the American market without fear of contravening those pesky gray-market laws that kept all but a few 512s from reaching U.S. shores. In basic terms, the Testarossa, introduced at the 1984 Paris Motor Show, followed the broad outlines that defined the 512, but it was a clear departure in execution.
Driving through a 5-speed manual gearbox, its flat-12 engine displaced the same 4.9L as before, but with new 4-valve cylinder heads, revised Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and other mechanical improvements, output was boosted from 340 HP to 380 in American tune while being made much more tractable at around-town speeds. Pininfarina put its wind tunnel to work refining the Testarossa’s styling, which debuted to considerable controversy due to its flamboyant side intake treatment and rearward visual weight. Those properties, however, were the fruits of solid engineering and a decade of firsthand experience developing the midmounted boxer layout and refining its aerodynamics.
The Testarossa’s wide rear track and upward-sweeping rear body produced vastly improved high-speed stability, and the straked body-side intakes efficiently fed side-mounted radiators, eliminating the 512’s front-mounted ones that were notorious for transferring heat into the cockpit. Perusing contemporaneous reviews of the Testarossa reveals unanimous approval of the driving experience, often expressed as surprise; in contrast to the 512 and the V-8-powered 308, the new TR offered a more upright and relaxed driving position, better ergonomics and increased headroom—the perfect combination for the long-distance grand touring cruise.
This incredibly low-mileage 1988 Testarossa epitomises those qualities with the added attraction of classic Rosso Corsa paint and a Crema leather interior with ample amenities, including air conditioning, power windows, dual mirrors, Cromodora wheels, Prancing Horse floor mats and that trademark gated shifter.
