Ferrari headed into the 21st century with a brand new mid-engine design, the 360 Modena, which replaced the exhilarating and beautiful F355 and boasted searing performance from its 3.5L/400 HP V-8 engine. After a number of 360 variants the Modena gave way at the 2004 Paris Auto Salon to the amazing F430, a huge technological leap forward. Its Plexiglas-covered V-8 engine displaced a full 4.3L and produced 483 HP at a screaming 8,500 RPM, a 21 percent increase over the 360 Modena, and at top speed the F430’s airflow-sensitive undertray produced 50 percent more downforce.
Driving the F430, or even watching one being driven, is a visceral experience, as Road & Track noted in a road test: “The Ferrari’s note, which is a glorious combination of sucking intake noise together with free-flowing exhaust shriek, seems to change every 500 RPM; the backfires that accompanies each full-throttle upshift just add to the symphony of sounds, while the blue flames that shoot out the exhausts at night add to our delight.” At the driver’s fingertips are the ignition “Start” switch and, for the first time, the F-1 inspired Manettino control switch offering five different driving modes from mild to full-race wild.
Finished with one of the most beautiful cockpits ever to adorn a Ferrari, the F430 is simply sublime. This one-owner 2008 example is thrilling proof of Ferrari’s mastery of the mid-engine V-8 sports car. Equipped with the rare 6-speed manual transaxle, it is finished in Grigio Silverstone with a sharp Cuoio leather interior. Driven just 5,574 miles, it is cosmetically virtually flawless thanks to a full clear bra on the front end and A-pillars. It has also been well maintained, with a recent service and service records since new, and is offered with books, tools, tender and car cover, two keys and the factory VIP book.
