In recognition of Pininfarina’s looming 70th anniversary in 2000, then-Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo invited Sergio Pininfarina to design a limited-production version of Ferrari’s incumbent 550 Maranello model, which would draw inspiration from the myriad previous collaborations between the two companies.
The resulting 550 Barchetta remained mechanically identical to its coupe sibling, yet gloriously divergent in purpose. Its transformation into open-top, two-seat form necessitated a longer rear tonneau area than the coupe, while a significantly shallower windscreen angle was adopted to improve aerodynamics. A cursory fabric hood was provided, although Ferrari recommended that this was not used above 75 mph—some 111 mph below the car’s maximum speed.
A mere 448 Barchettas were built, of which this magnificent example is number 339, as marked by the commemorative plaque underneath the gated gear shifter. Duly finished in Rosso Corsa with light tan interior, the car was delivered new to Germany before passing to its second Belgian owner in 2014. It has remained in his custody ever since.
Beautifully presented, and accompanied by its original fitted suitcase, factory documentation, handbooks, toolkit, hood bag and period fitment carbon fibre hardtop, chassis “124317” shows just 9,986 km on its odometer and as such must surely be one of the most original and correct 550 Barchetta Pininfarina examples offered for sale in recent times.
Alors que le 70ème anniversaire de Pininfarina approchait, Luca di Montezemolo, alors président de Ferrari, invita Sergio Pininfarina à concevoir à partir de la 550 Maranello alors en production une série limitée qui puiserait son inspiration dans les innombrables collaborations qu'avaient menées les deux firmes.
La 550 Barchetta qui naquit ainsi restait mécaniquement identique à son frère le coupé, mais elle n'en était pas moins splendidement différente. Sa transformation en une deux-places découverte avait imposé une plage arrière plus longue que celle du coupé et son parebrise s'était sensiblement incliné pour améliorer son aérodynamique. Une capote sommaire était fournie, mais Ferrari recommandait de ne pas l'utiliser au-delà de 120 km/h, soit 180 km/h de moins que la vitesse de pointe de la voiture.
Il n'y eut que 448 Barchetta produites, parmi lesquelles ce somptueux exemplaire qui porte le numéro 339, ainsi qu'en atteste la plaque commémorative fixée sur la grille de pied de levier de vitesses. De couleur rouge Rosso Corsa avec un intérieur marron clair, comme il se doit, cette voiture fut livrée neuve en Allemagne, puis a été vendue en 2014 à son second propriétaire, un Belge qui en est toujours le dépositaire.
D'une allure magnifique, et muni de son jeu de bagages spécifiques, sa documentation d'usine, son outillage, sa documentation de bord, sa housse de capote et son hard-top d'époque en fibre de carbone, tous d'origine, ce châssis 124317 n'affiche que 9 986 km au compteur. Ce doit donc sûrement être de tous ces derniers temps la 550 Barchetta Pininfarina la plus conforme à la définition d'origine qui soit proposée à la vente.
