428 bhp, 4,942 cc DOHC horizontally opposed 12-cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, five-speed manual transmission, front and rear independent suspension with unequal-length wishbones, coil springs, and anti-roll bars; and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 100.4 in.
The 512 TR was a welcome update to the Testarossa and helped Ferrari stay competitive with Lamborghini’s new Diablo. It was introduced at the 1992 Los Angeles Auto Show and was markedly improved over earlier models, as its interior had been given numerous updates to improve driver and passenger comfort, with the most notable changes being to the seats and steering wheel. Outside, the nose received a mild facelift to aid aerodynamics and some of the Testarossa’s sharp lines were softened, but the striking appeal of the Testarossa remained.
Underneath the still gorgeous styling, the 512 TR gained 38 additional horsepower, thanks to a more efficient exhaust system and the adoption of Nikasil cylinder liners. Ferrari engineers focused on increasing the car’s overall drivability by installing quicker steering, a single-plate clutch coupled with a smoother gearbox, and larger cross-drilled disc brakes. Top speed was increased to 195 mph, just shy of the F40’s incredible 201 mph, though at a fraction of the price. Legendary racing driver Phil Hill wrote in Road & Track magazine, “lurking under that bodywork is about three quarters of an F40 with all the conveniences of any modern GT.”
Attractively finished in Nero with black leather, this 512 TR is serviced and ready for its next owner to drive and enjoy. Ferrari of Vancouver performed a full engine out service in November 2015, which included new suspension bushings, gaskets, seals, timing belts, idler bearings, engine mounts, O2 sensors, fluids, hood shocks, and countless other items. Additionally, the water pump and alternator were rebuilt at this time to ensure future reliability. As this was a Canadian delivery car, in November 2016 the current owner decided to replace the kilometers speedometer with one that read in miles per hour.
The car had 17,600 kilometers at the time of the change, so the current mileage of less than 11,000 on the new speedometer is correct. Included with the sale are the books, service records, and the factory tool kit in its leather case.
There are few better 512 TRs available today.
