Featuring muscular bodywork designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, Ferrari’s 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer marked Ferrari’s long-awaited, and to some observers, overdue, exotic mid-engine challenge to the Lamborghini Miura and Maserati Bora. Featuring aggressive, almost menacing, styling rooted in Pininfarina’s 1968 P6 concept car and debuted as a prototype in 1971 at Turin, the production 365 GT4 BB debuted at Paris in 1973 Paris Salon with flat-12 power based on Scuderia Ferrari’s 312 B Grand Prix cars. A massive all-around performer, the BB and its successors are significant as Ferrari’s first 12-cylinder, mid-engine road models.
The 512 BB was an object of desire for the wealthy and famous when new, with none officially imported to the United States. Instead, these formidable Ferrari models were classified as “Gray Market” imports and then federalized with safety and emissions updates under the watchful eyes of the DOT and EPA. Sporting S/N 26243 and offered with the odometer reading 1,437 miles, this 512 Berlinetta Boxer was acquired by Phil Bachman in Northern California in 2004. It was desired by Bachman and added to his Ferrari stable as the final example required to fulfill his quest to have each of the three Berlinetta Boxer models (365 GT4, 512 BB, 512 BBi) represented in his collection.
As one of only 929 produced from 1976 to 1981, this example is powered by the Weber-carbureted 4.9L flat 12-cylinder engine, numbered 345, paired with a gated 5-speed manual transmission numbered 353. The unforgettable Pininfarina-styled, Scaglietti-assembled body, featuring competition-style clamshell-opening front and rear compartments, carries Body No. 268. Handsomely finished in Rosso Chiaro 20-R-190 over a Pelle Nera VM 8500 interior, this stunning Ferrari V-12 Supercar from the renowned Bachman Ferrari Collection is accompanied by its tools, books and manuals.
