When Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo announced the front-engined V-12-powered F12, he made clear his intent to make it the highest-performance production Ferrari ever built. A spectacular performer in every respect, the F12 made good on that promise, earning “Top Gear” magazine’s "The Supercar of the Year" award in 2012. But this is Ferrari we’re talking about, and Ferrari never stands still. As proof, in 2015 they introduced the F12tdf. The name is an allusion to the famed Ferraris that dominated the grueling Tour de France road-and-track race from 1956 through 1964, defining the very concept of a grand-touring road car that can win in the most demanding racing conditions.
The F12tdf is the 21st-century expression of that concept, an immensely powerful and agile machine whose performance exceeds that of the F12 in every category. Its 6.3L V-12 engine was upgraded with race-developed mechanical lifters and variable-geometry intake trumpets used on Formula 1 cars, boosting output from 730 HP to 769 HP at 8,500 RPM and from 509 lb-ft of torque to 520 lb-ft, 80 percent of which is available at just 2,500 RPM. The tdf’s 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox delivers 30-percent quicker upshifts and shifts down 40-percent faster, with more closely-placed ratios.
The track is wider, turn-in is tighter thanks to better front grip and 4-wheel steering, the first in a Ferrari, improves corner exit stability. Ferrari also reworked the tdf’s aerodynamic package, resulting in 87-percent more downforce than the “standard” F12, and increased use of carbon fiber combined with weight savings in the spartan interior saves 240 pounds in overall weight. The result of these improvements is a scalded-cat dash to 60 MPH in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of more than 211 MPH.
In fact, the F12tdf laps Ferrari’s own Fiorano test track no less than 2-seconds faster than the F12 and finishes little more than a second behind the LaFerrari that holds the all-time Fiorano lap record.
