20 years after the last Shelby-powered Mustang rolled off the line in 1969, Carroll Shelby and his company finally made his return to V8-powered vehicles, except this time it was a little different. After establishing the partnership with Chrysler in the mid-1980s for the Shelby GLHS, Carol set his sights on a pickup, the Dodge Dakota. Dodge shipped stripped-down trucks to Shelby’s SoCal shop, where the truck’s 3.9-liter V6 was swapped out for a 5.2-liter V8 good for 175hp. All trucks came with a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission and a 3.90 limited-slip rear end.
Shelby upped the performance look with 15” alloy wheels, a front air dam, fender flares and a bed-mounted light bar extension. For the interior, a sport 3-spoke steering wheel was added, along with Shelby-patterned dark gray cloth seat inserts. The end result was one of the best performance pickups at the time, until dethroned years later by competitors the GMC Syclone and Ford F-150 Lightning.
This particular Shelby Dakota is the very first one produced of the 1,475, Serial #1. It was initially sold to a retail customer, then later purchased back by Carroll Shelby for use as a personal vehicle and shop truck for Shelby American. After several years in service, it was placed in the Shelby Museum collection, where it remained until 2016. Today the truck is presented in its highly original condition as used by Shelby. It retains the original white paint with black graphics and two-tone maroon and gray interior. The truck comes documented with numerous copies of registrations and insurances cards tying it to Shelby American, and even comes with a speeding ticket issued to Donald Rager, COO of Shelby American, from Arizona Department of Public Safety in 1996.
With provenance from one of the most recognizable names in American automotive performance, this Shelby Dakota is a great piece for any Shelby enthusiast.
