In 1989, Dodge offered customers something truly unique: a topless truck. Inspired by the Southern California cruising scene, the brand offered a drop-top option for its midsize Dakota. The result was sensational, the likes of nothing else in the marketplace. The American Sunroof Corporation handled the conversion at its facility in Southgate, Michigan. Completed hardtop trucks left Chrysler’s Dodge City/Warren Truck complex in Warren, Michigan, and were shipped to ASC, where the team would cut off the roof and install a manual vinyl top. It could be completely removed from the vehicle or folded back and covered with a soft molded boot.
To add back in some needed rigidity, ASC installed a padded roll bar behind the seats. All told, the process added around $3,000 to the truck’s base price. Vehicles could be had in 2-wheel drive form, an upgraded 2-wheel drive Sport version and 4-wheel drive Sport trim. A scant 2,842 vehicles were built, all equipped with a 3.9L/125 HP V-6. That powerplant was then paired to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. The trucks came in three colors: Bright White, Black and Colorado Red. Exterior treatments included a blacked-out grille, headlamp bezels, front bumper, door handles and mirrors. Despite the radical alterations, Chrysler’s factory warranty wasn’t voided.
In 1990, Dodge offered the radical ragtop again and added Daytona Blue to the exterior color palate and the option of the SE trim that included a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. Far fewer were built, with just 909 assembled. That includes this example, which shows 95,728 kilometers (59,500 miles). Inside the cabin, there’s a gray cloth interior and power steering, brakes, windows and locks. Under the hood is the 3.9L V-6 paired to an automatic transmission with overdrive. Top up or down and on- or off-road, this Dakota convertible is one rugged rig that readily stands out.
