Produced from 1946 to 1950, Chrysler’s Town & Country line of post-war luxury automobiles had its origins in a concept conceived by Chrysler Division General Manager Dave Wallace, whose quest for a streamlined station wagon frustrated outside wood body manufacturers. Their failures prompted Wallace to return the project to his own team of engineers, who in 1941 produced an elegant fastback sedan body with unique clamshell rear doors. Imposing and showy, the car's extensive wooden trim covered all surfaces from the cowl back save for the rear fenders and satisfied Wallace’s wish for a stylish vehicle suitable for the dual use its name implied.
The Town & Country returned in 1946 with Chrysler-designed bodies built by Chrysler subsidiary Pekin Wood Products of Helena, Arkansas. Woodies gained in popularity in the early postwar years, and the Town and Country was arguably the most handsome and durable of them all. With its Ash framework, luxurious interior and regal bearing, the Town and Country was positioned as one of the “halo” cars tasked with luring potential buyers back to auto showrooms. This 1947 Chrysler Town & Country convertible is one of only 3,136 examples built in 1947. A true woody convertible, it is a genuine California “Black plate” car, a significant quality in such a low-production American classic.
Splendidly finished in gorgeous Black paint, it is fitted with a typically luxurious Red leather interior with a power-operated Beige soft top. Power comes from Chrysler’s 323/135 HP flathead Straight Eight engine, which drives through a “Presto-Matic” 4-speed semi-automatic transmission. Wide Whitewall tires, fender skirts and brilliant chrome and stainless hardware are the perfect finishing touches for this majestic post-war classic.
