One of just 593 produced, this 1963 Chrysler New Yorker Salon shows the influence of designer Elwood Engel, who replaced the innovative and daring Virgil Exner as head of Chrysler styling in 1961. Having gained prominence in the automotive industry for his design of the 1961 Lincoln Continental, the car credited with saving the then-moribund Lincoln-Mercury Division, Engel brought a more masculine look to the design table. His ideas and direction gave Chrysler styling a new, more modern look that shook off the baggage that had begun to clutter around Exner’s later work. The 1963 New Yorker was one of the first Chrysler products to exhibit Engel’s influence.
The body was generally more smooth-sided and squared than before, with a bold character line running the entire perimeter at the tops of the fenders and the headlights arranged side by side, in contrast to Exner’s slanting pattern. The New Yorker Salon’s four-door hardtop design was further highlighted by a contrasting roof panel that suggested the open-roof phaeton of years past while avoiding the associated engineering complexities.
Built on the same 122-inch wheelbase as the rest of the Chrysler line, only 593 of the 27,960 New Yorkers sold in 1963 were four-door hardtop Salons, which represented the top of the New Yorker lineup with a price tag of $5,860, almost $2,000 more than the four-door sedan. Finished in understated Embassy Gold, this example offered from the Uncle Fred No Reserve Collection features a beautiful, upgraded, matching leather interior, the details of which show vestiges of Exner’s earlier influence; this was, for instance, one of the last Chrysler models to retain the Exner-designed pushbutton controls for the TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission.
The New Yorker Salon enjoyed ample power from its 413 CI V-8 engine, one of the most powerful in the industry with 340 HP and 470 lb-ft of torque. Power steering and brakes, air conditioning, Auto-Pilot speed control, power windows and six-way power front seats with passenger recline and an AM/FM radio were all standard luxuries in this elegant and exclusive Chrysler.
