In 1957, Chrysler introduced a brand-new design theme across its entire product line. The Virgil Exner-conceived “Forward Look” translated into long, low sleek-looking cars with sweeping rear fins, a look that was perfect for the flagship New Yorker and lasted through to a major restyling for 1962. After the 1959 switch from the Hemi to the lighter and more compact 413 CI wedge V-8, the 1960 New Yorker marked the change to unibody construction utilizing front and rear subframes while retaining front torsion bars and Hotchkis rear suspension with outboard-mounted leaf springs. This beautiful 1960 Chrysler New Yorker convertible won Mopar Best of Show and the J.W.
Steiner Trophy at the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance after a two-year restoration by Bob Hayen and Gary Goers of Kallispell, Montana. Chrysler built only 556 New Yorker convertibles in 1960. No detail was left untouched in this car’s restoration, an absolute necessity in such a regal automobile, whose highlights include a “Flight Sweep” rear deck, power swivel front seats and the unique “AstraDome” instrument panel. This prize-winning convertible incorporates a rebuilt 413/380 HP “Golden Lion” V-8 engine backed by a push-button operated TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and includes power steering and brakes, the latter upgraded with vented front discs for improved safety.
The only other deviation from original is the switch from the original Polar Blue paint to luminous Bluegrass, which is well complemented with tinted glass, Gold trim accents and classic wide Whitewall tires. Typical New Yorker features include power windows, locks, antenna and top, “Auto-Pilot” cruise control, remote driver’s mirror and a “Golden Touch” radio.
