Designer extraordinaire Virgil Exner had been largely responsible for the surge of popularity in Chrysler’s postwar model lines the previous four years, and this 1960 New Yorker convertible bears the unmistakable signs of his handiwork. Influenced by the creations of the Italian firm Ghia, yet creating near-iconic forms in stamped metal specific to his own signature, this is an authentic representation of the Forward Look he championed. In this model year, there were just 556 New Yorker convertibles built, and this example is powered by Chrysler’s large-displacement 413 CI Golden Lion wedge engine.
The 126-inch wheelbase of the two-door New Yorker convertible allowed Exner free reign for the lengthy tail fins, well-placed accents throughout and near-streamlined stance. On this example—the result of a comprehensive concours-grade restoration—the color combination is a remarkably hued red exterior, red-and-white interior, gold New Yorker emblems and body-length chrome rocker moldings. The RB engine featured 10.0:1 compression, 4-barrel carburetor, snorkel-type air cleaner and Golden Lion decaling. It is backed by Chrysler’s capable TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission, operated via dash-mounted pushbutton controls.
Using the company’s torsion-bar front suspension, driving is assisted by both power steering and brakes, and the exterior further features a remote side mirror. Once the doors are open, it is easy to understand the cosmopolitan nature of the New Yorker model. Beginning with the two-tone vinyl coverings and AstraDome instrument panel, occupants benefit from air conditioning, power windows and the Golden Tone radio; the power top is here as well. The finishing touches on this car include the chrome wire wheel covers with spinners and wide whitewall tires that allow full expression of luxury.
The dawn of the ‘60s saw a blending of automotive stylings that has become quite definitive of this period. This New Yorker is a pure expression of Chrysler’s designs from this memorable era, blended by color, shape and options.
