From 1955, 300 “letter” category cars defined the personal luxury car market for Chrysler buyers and were offered as packages that were meant to convey style and power. This example is a “G” series model from 1961 and is one of only 337 convertibles produced that model season. Chrysler was transitioning into the new decade with changes in styling and engineering development, and 1961 was a year for this. Already given a comprehensive restoration, this 1961 Chrysler 300G Convertible represents the top of the Chrysler brand’s offerings when it came to two-door vehicles with fins and body lines that were among the final touches penciled by designer Virgil Exner.
Beneath the hood is one of Detroit’s more noteworthy advances: a 413 CI cross-ram V-8 equipped with Chrysler’s exclusive dual 4-barrel carburetor “long ram” induction system. Designed to allow for sonic intake tuning and featuring red runners and gold air cleaners here, it is still a remarkable sight when the hood is lifted. The 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission is behind it. By 1961, the new unibody chassis design allowed for greater freedom in designing suspension characteristics like the Torsion Aire front end.
This car features the a black exterior that is highlighted nicely by its large dramatic front bumper, angular headlamps astride the special grille, rear-quarter side spear with large 300 medallion, and the chrome-edged lamp inserts within each rear fin. There is a white convertible top and a tan interior with the unique swivel front seats, rear bucket seats and a full-length console. In addition to factory air conditioning and factory power windows, the 300G has a chrome-laden dash that includes the pushbutton shifter for the transmission, the self-seeking radio equipped with a power rear antenna, the electric clock and a console-mount tachometer.
Chrysler is spelled out on the grille and decklid, with the “C 3” emblem centered on the trunk lid. Beneath that is the spare and jack, while the car rides on steel wheels with full-size 300-emblem wheel covers and wide whitewall tires. The 1961 Chrysler 300 is a true transitional model, and this 1961 Chrysler 300G Convertible offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy ownership status.
