Jeff Gordon’s iconic No. 24 DuPont Rainbow livery is the winningest paint scheme in NASCAR history, with 52 wins at 17 different tracks, three championship titles, and over 10,000 laps led. After “Fire and Flames” became the norm for Gordon’s No. 24 in 2001, the Rainbow only made one more appearance until Gordon’s final season in 2015, when this car was painted in the signature livery for one final ride at the Bristol night race. The evening was a highlight of Gordon’s retirement tour for the four-time champion and his adoring fans alike.
Referred to as “24-861” for its race number and chassis number, respectively, this SS was campaigned five times by Gordon during the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series en route to a 6th-place overall finish. Every time 24-861 hit the track in 2014, Gordon felt he had the winning race car—especially during its debut at Fontana, where Gordon was leading when a caution flew just before the white flag fell. The hectic final restart demoted the car to a lackluster 13th-place result.
Another strong run at Darlington saw Gordon maintain the points lead that he would hold for most of the season, where the No. 24 started 9th and finished 7th. This car’s next outing was the Coca-Cola 600 on the 20th anniversary of Gordon’s first career win in the event in 1994. Battling back spasms, Gordon piloted 24-861 in heroic fashion, starting from 27th to come home in 7th place.
Next came Michigan in June, where Gordon started on the outside pole; he achieved a 6th-place finish in what would prove to be his best results driving 24-861. At Atlanta on Labor Day weekend, 24-861 wore the Panasonic livery for the first time. Gordon drove from 9th on the grid; after a tire blowout and ensuing lengthy pit stop, Gordon earned a hard-fought 17th-place finish to close out the 2014 season for 24-861. All told, this car earned Gordon 124 points across five races entered.
24-861 returned three more times during Gordon’s final NASCAR season in 2015, en route to the team’s 3rd-place overall finish that year. The car started 12th and finished 7th at Texas in April before returning for Gordon’s final Coca-Cola 600, where he started 18th and finished in 15th place.
Since retirement, the car has been meticulously restored to the condition in which it sat on the starting grid that night in Bristol by the Hendrick Motorsports Certified Race Cars team of experts using new, authentic, period-correct parts. This complete teardown and restoration was executed over the course of several hundred hours by the same team members responsible for building current NASCAR chassis provided to teams; the Hendrick Motorsports Certified Race Cars program leaves no component unaddressed. The car’s engine is the top-of-the-line Hendrick Motorsports-certified Chevrolet “R07” fuel-injected race engine good for 725 horsepower.
Inside, the cabin has been furnished with a new NASCAR-spec safety cell, fire suppression system, and carbon fiber dash complete with all the proper specifications preferred by Jeff Gordon himself.
24-861, Gordon’s last rainbow livery car, is now accompanied by documentation from Hendrick Motorsports, historic imagery, along with a race suit worn by Jeff Gordon during the 2015 season. One would be hard pressed to find a more alluring, meticulously restored, and documented ex-NASCAR chassis presented in such an iconic livery driven by NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon.
