The Sixty Special made its first appearance as part of Cadillac’s 1938 lineup as a derivative of the Series 60. The Bill Mitchell-designed four-door sedan was a styling masterpiece, employing a new X-chassis which enabled the body to rest within the frame while providing the stiffest chassis on the market. Setting the tone for models to follow, the Sixty Special had a wheelbase three inches longer, and sat three inches lower, than standard Series 60 cars; running boards were omitted, as was the beltline trim, giving the car a sleek appearance that made it seem even lower still. The Sixty Special remained part of the Cadillac lineup through 1972 (eventually retiring in 1987 following a brief reprise).
Sales of the distinctive Fleetwood Sixty Special soared to record levels in 1953 with dealers delivering an even 20,000 units. While riding on an exclusive 130-inch wheelbase, the Sixty Special shared its 210-horsepower, 331-cuibic-inch, overhead-valve, V-8 engine and four-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission with other Cadillacs. That year’s models were the first to include as standard 12-volt electrics and offer optional factory air conditioning—for a whopping $619.55! Another first, the Autronic Eye, was an outer space-type pod mounted on the left side of the top of the instrument panel that sensed the headlamps of oncoming vehicles, automatically dimming the vehicle’s high-beam headlamps.
Such incredible wizardry is included in this time-warp vehicle, which has both factory air conditioning and Autronic Eye in addition to its enviable standard equipment. Inside, you will find both power steering and hydraulic window lifts, radio, and an electric clock. Remarkably, its odometer indicates just 76,237 miles at the time of cataloging, and it remains in exquisitely preserved unrestored condition from new. Finished in stunning Cobalt Blue Metallic over a blue cloth interior, it has been extremely well-cared for throughout its history as evidenced by the lovely patina of an untouched vehicle.
Outside are dual rearview mirrors, rear fender skirts, period-correct wide whitewall tires and the distinctive eight vertical chrome louvers ahead of the rear wheels that set the Sixty Special apart from other Cadillacs.
Among its awards are the Best Original award at the Cadillac LaSalle Club Grand National in 2013 and Most Outstanding Closed Car at the Greenwich Concours in 2014, which will remain with the car. Such novelties as the operator’s manual, Cadillac ID Card to the original owner (Leonard C. Myers of Sherman Oaks, California) and the original heater operating instructions hang tag are included.
