The 50-percent expansion of Buick’s 1940 model line was all part of Buick General Manager Harlow Curtice’s campaign to broaden the division’s customer base, and it continued to pay off when 1941 production zoomed past 374,000 units. This 1941 Buick Super Convertible shows off the elegance and power that popularized the Super nameplate. A well-kept and carefully maintained example of this sporty Buick convertible, it is powered by the exciting new Fireball Dynaflash inline-8 engine introduced that year, featuring dual Stromberg Aerotype carburetors and rated at 125 HP and 278 lb-ft of torque in both Special and Super models.
The car was in California’s Bay Area for almost 30 years and was once proudly owned by a local Buick club member. In 2004, the car was the subject of a wide-ranging cosmetic and mechanical restoration that included stripping the car to bare metal and repainting it in beautiful Sequoia Cream. The mechanical renewal included removing, rebuilding and balancing the engine. New pistons and 1949 insert rods were installed, and the twin carburetors were rebuilt; a new ignition system, plug wires, water and fuel pumps, fan belt and all new hoses were installed along with a new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing.
In 2006, the handsome red leather interior was reupholstered, and a new carpet and trunk kit were installed. In 2007, the car received new dual exhaust. In 2013, a new 6-volt battery was installed, and in 2014, the brakes, including the master cylinder and wheel cylinders, were rebuilt. Completed with a smooth-operating power top, wide whitewall tires on red-painted steel wheels with chromed trim rings and caps, and acres of glittering chrome, this well-detailed show-quality Buick classic remains impressively fresh 3,000 miles after the restoration, and it is ready to deliver another generation of motoring pleasure.
