From the basis of the Bentley R-Type sedan, British customizers went on to fashion all manner of “specials”—but nothing quite like this American reimagining of the Standard Steel sedan. Still recognizable in silhouette as a 1954 factory-bodied Standard Steel Bentley, which survived much better in the American climate than on the salted winter roads of rainy Britain, this passion project has elevated the capable Bentley to another level. Bentley and Rolls-Royce would not introduce a V-8 until 1959, but this Bentley custom features at its heart a General Motors LS 5.7L crate V-8 with approximately 11 miles, mated to a 4L60 automatic transmission.
Underneath, there’s a professionally modified chassis to cope with the extra power. Likewise, appointments are beyond the imagination of British luxury cars of the period, with Vintage Air air conditioning and heat, Bluetooth audio, power windows, a power-actuated trunk lid, and Baer 4-wheel power disc brakes with chrome brake booster. The lowered suspension, independent at the front end, rides on 18-inch Bonspeed wheels with 225/45ZR18 front and 295/35ZR18 rear tires to give an altogether more purposeful stance—set off at the rear by twin wide-mouth tailpipes. Meanwhile, elements of the interior pay homage to the Bentley heritage.
There’s leather upholstery, but with racing-style bucket seats up front, more akin to the lightweight chairs on the Bentley R-Type fastback Continental rather than the flat and unsupportive seats on the Standard Steel factory sedan. Additionally, wooden veneers on the dash, center console and door cappings honor the original. Likewise, the frontal and rear treatment shows restraint in preserving the elegant bumpers and headlamp proportions. In all, this vision of the Bentley R-Type knows where it came from and will get you where you’re going much quicker than the original, and in unique style: a Standard Steel R-Type that is anything but standard.
