The first 8C-2300 appeared in 1931 as a prototype for that year's Mille Miglia. Two examples of the Grand Prix model were then entered in the Monza Grand Prix, where they finished first and second. From this double success the competition versions received the name "Monza". That same year, the Alfa 8C-2300 became the car to be reckoned with in competitions, winning the Targa Florio, followed by three consecutive victories at Le Mans, in front of the frustrated Mercedes SSK and SSKL. Several victories at the Spa 24 Hour race and also at the Monaco Grand Prix can be added to this, confirming the incredible qualities of the Alfa 8C and "Monzas" on both road and racetrack.
THE CAR OFFERED
Wisconsin based David Uilhein was one of the pioneering collectors of his generation and of his region, alongside the likes of D. Cameron Peck. He had a penchant for Alfas, acquiring and trading a number of them over the years as well as spares, those including the engine and gearbox from car 2211083 which forms the basis of this exacting 'Special'.
According to Simon Moore's authoritative work, The Legendary 2.3
, chassis number 2211083 was borne with the matched engine 2211083 and was a long chassis variant delivered new in Turin. It migrated to the USA either just before or immediately after the war and became the property of Jack Williams at this point. Williams was a well-known radio personality, and this was one of a pair of 2.3s that he owned. The tale goes that Williams struggled with the engine in 2211083 and switched it out for a flathead Mercury, he also didn't take to the Coupe body it wore by that point so simply chopped the roof off!
In its lowered form and with Mercury power, Williams is understood to have set off in the 2.3 across the country on tour and when the car let him down, he gave up and sold it! The evolved 2211083 car was found in Arizona in the 1980s and was later restored and fitted with engine number 2311205 in the process. Uilhein purchased the engine and gearbox directly from Jack Williams sometime in the 1950s we believe and these languished in his collection for many years. In the late 1990s, while restoring his ex-Tommy Lee P3 Alfa, his growing relationship with UK Alfa restorer and expert Neil Twyman lead to a practical use for the parts.
Twyman was able to source a brand new rolling chassis frame from Italy, the engine and gearbox were shipped to the UK and the project began in earnest. Another particularly useful period component was the back axle which came from Uilhein's P3 Alfa, is a period 8C unit and was removed from the P3 in order to put it back to its correct twin drive shaft form. It was Uihlein's wish that Twyman build a 'Monza' Special for him, which with his excellent eye for details and bodywork he was a natural choice to complete such work. Through the period of 1998 to 2000 the car was constructed, with its chassis and bodywork being the only significant non – Alfa pieces. The 2300 engine was bored out to 1934 Monza, 2.6 liter specifications as part of its rebuild.
The car was finished by 2001 and shipped to the USA and was ready to use then, albeit we are uncertain how much actual use Mr. Uilhein got from the car. In 2007 as part of the dispersal of Mr. Uilhein's collection, the Alfa Monza Special was offered for sale by auction where it was acquired by the current prominent collector joining a stable of the finest competition and sports cars of the pre and immediate post war era as a symbolic reference point for the European greats of the 1930s. Over the course of the last 16 years the Alfa has been kept ready to use and routinely checked over, but rarely used for any particular distance with the result that its now 20-year old restoration shows very little age to it at all.
Alfa Monzas have been copied since their earliest days and over the course of the 1960s, 70s and even 80s numerous long chassis cars succumbed to being reconfigured in this form, something that would today be frowned upon. This is arguably the best of all worlds, the majority of its running gear being original Portello (Milan) components, sitting in a modern chassis and with modern coachwork allowing the driver to experience much of the real Alfa, at a fraction of the eight-figure pricing of an original Monza today. Further, in some countries its presence of 3 of 5 major components would enable it to receive papers and be able to race in historic competition events.
