For years, Porsche’s formula for entry-level international customer racing revolved around one key ingredient: the mid-engine Cayman. With the legendary 718 Cayman now reaching the end of its production run, the German manufacturer is rewriting the rulebook. Beginning with the 2027 season, Porsche’s entry-level customer racing program will transition to the iconic 911 platform for the very first time. Named the 911 GT4 R, the new race car replaces the Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport while taking its foundations from the championship-winning 992.2-generation 911 Cup machine.

The engineering package brings proven motorsport DNA to customer teams. Mounted behind the rear axle is a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six revving to an impressive 8,750 rpm and producing up to 513 horsepower (520 PS) along with 346 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque before Balance of Performance adjustments are applied. Power is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels through a rapid-shifting six-speed sequential gearbox paired with a heavy-duty four-disc racing clutch. To achieve an estimated curb weight of just 3,340 lbs (1,515 kg), Porsche equips the car with lightweight natural-fiber-reinforced composite body panels instead of conventional carbon fiber.

Will the switch from the balanced mid-engine Cayman architecture to a rear-engine 911 platform prove to be a winning move, or does it change the GT4 formula too much?
