As performance cars increasingly turn to dual-clutch transmissions, American enthusiasts have managed to keep the traditional manual alive. The 2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S was initially planned as an automatic-only model, but Porsche Cars North America pushed German executives to reconsider after seeing strong demand for three-pedal sports cars.

The result is a six-speed manual version offered exclusively in North America. Power comes from the familiar twin-turbo flat-six, producing 473 hp / 480 PS. While an automatic gearbox can deliver quicker acceleration and lap times, many U.S. buyers still value the direct connection and involvement provided by a clutch pedal and manual shifter.

That demand is backed by real sales data. Manual take-rates remain particularly strong among Porsche performance models, reaching around 80 percent for the GT3 Touring. The Carrera S weighs approximately 3,327 lb / 1,509 kg and comes equipped with rear-axle steering and center-lock wheels.

Porsche’s decision shows that the manual transmission may not be disappearing as quickly as expected—at least when customers are willing to put their money behind their preferences. But does driver involvement matter more than shaving fractions of a second from acceleration times? Can manuals survive as sports cars move toward hybrid and electric power? And should manufacturers pay closer attention to what enthusiasts demand?
