Audi says maximizing interior space was a priority, and that strategy is most noticeable in the cargo area. Behind the third-row seats, the Q9 offers 19 cubic feet of luggage capacity—one cubic foot more than the GLS and six more than the X7. However, the BMW and Mercedes still provide slightly better third-row legroom, suggesting Audi prioritized cargo versatility over rear passenger space. Performance is equally competitive. The standard Q9 is powered by a 429-horsepower twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6, comfortably outperforming the 375-hp six-cylinder engines found in both the BMW X7 xDrive40i and Mercedes-Benz GLS450.
