Volkswagen began work on the car during the early 1970’s as the replacement for the ageing Karmann Ghia coupé. The platform of the Golf and Jetta was used to underpin the new Scirocco, although almost every part of the car was re-engineered in favour of a sportier drive and the model's all-new styling resulted in a sleeker and sportier car than either the Golf or Jetta. A heavily re-designed Mk. II variant went on sale in 1982; a unique feature of which was the location of the rear spoiler midway up the glass on the rear hatch. A mid-cycle update occurred in 1984 which included minor changes over the 1982 model; a redesigned air conditioning compressor, a modified brake master cylinder with in-line proportioning valves and a brake light switch mounted to the pedal instead of on the master cylinder, also a new space-saver spare wheel was added, which provided room for a larger fuel tank. Leather interior, power windows and mirrors, air conditioning, and a manual sunroof were options for all years. As with the first generation Scirocco’s, the car was assembled on behalf of Volkswagen by Karmann of Osnabrück. This left hand drive, UK registered, totally original example was supplied new to Germany and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. It is presented in gleaming red with black GTi cloth interior and comes with electric windows, twin headlights and has low mileage considering its year of manufacture. These were striking looking sports coupés when produced originally and they have certainly survived the passage of time in terms of design.
