Dominant in Grand Prix competition until the Italian and German state-backed Alfa Romeo, Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz entries proved overpowering by the mid-1930s, Bugattiβs lithe and fast T59 was still a major threat on any starting grid, especially in the hands of Jean-Pierre Wimille, who began his professional racing career with a Bugatti 37A at the 1930 French Grand Prix in Pau. Following his victory at the deadly Deauville Grand Prix in 1936, Wimille contested the Long Island, New York, Vanderbilt Cup, finishing second to fellow living legend, Tazio Nuvolari. Of all of Wimilleβs many victories, his two overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans would cement his enduring legend. Co-driving a streamlined Type 57G βTankβ with Robert Benoist, the pair scored Bugattiβs first victory at Le Mans in 1937. Wimille repeated the feat in 1939, this time sharing the drive with another legendary Bugatti pilot, Pierre Veyron, at the wheel of a supercharged Type 57Cβagain with sleek, envelope-type, βTankβ-style bodywork. Synonymous with the Bugatti marque, Wimille served in the French Resistance during World War II with fellow racers Benoist and William Grover-Williams, and he was the trioβs sole survivor. Postwar, Wimille manufactured a car of his own design and won his second French Grand Prix in 1948, this time for Alfa Romeo. Seemingly invincible, Wimille was a strong bet for a future Grand Prix World Championship; however, he was killed driving a Simca-Gordini monoposto in practice for the 1949 Buenos Aires Grand Prix when he swerved to avoid spectators. Through it all, however, the legend of Jean-Pierre Wimille will forever be most closely associated with Bugatti. Fast-forward to August 2013 and the Pebble Beach Concours dβElegance, where the reborn Bugatti marque, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. of Molsheim, France, premiered the new Legends Edition of its electrifying Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. Powered by an 8.0L/1,184 HP quad-turbocharged W-16 engine and automatic transmission, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is more than worthy of its name as the worldβs fastest roadster and the embodiment of Bugatti Founder Ettore Bugattiβs Pur Sang (Thoroughbred) ethos. Fittingly, the first Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse model released under the Legends of Bugatti program was the Jean-Pierre Wimille Edition. Showing just 1,185 miles, this stunning example is one of only three Jean-Pierre Wimille Edition cars produced, replete with numerous enhancements emulating the iconic presence of the champion driverβs 1937 Le Mans-winning Bugatti Type 57G βTank.β Beginning with its Bleu Wimille paint finish and Dark Blue visible carbon fiber accents, exterior highlights include a Le Mans circuit motif in silver to the lower surface of the Veyronβs power-adjustable rear spoiler, Dark Blue visible carbon fiber for the rear storage-compartment lid and Jean-Pierre Wimilleβs signature laser-engraved onto the Dark Blue fuel and oil filler caps. Interior enhancements include Wimilleβs signature embroidered on the seat headrests, the βLes LΓ©gendes de Bugattiβ series interior door logo and a Le Mans circuit logo etched on the central βwaterfallβ between the seats. Proven capable of reaching 408.84 KPH (254.04 MPH) in tests, worthy of its 280 MPH speedometer and 1,200 HP power meter, this Jean-Pierre Wimille Edition Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse features extremely luxurious passenger amenities to match its staggering performance, including automatic climate control and an audiophile-quality Burmester AM/FM CD audio system. Stunning alloy wheels mounting Michelin Pilot Sport extreme-performance tires provide the finishing touch to this one-of-three, ultra-performance automobile that appropriately celebrates one of the greatest racing drivers of all time, Jean-Pierre Wimille, and the immortal Bugatti sports racer he drove to his first victory at Le Mans. https://www.mecum.com/lots/520638/2014-bugatti-veyron-16-4-grand-sport-vitesse-jean-pierre-wimille-legend-edition/
Chassis No.: VF9SA25C78M795164 Auction: Monterey 2017 Auction date: August 19, 2017 Lot No.: S72 $900,000 | High bid β’ Exterior: White/Blue β’ $38,329.42 service completed at Bentley Miami December 2, 2016, within the last 100 miles β’ Service included 4 new tires, TPMS, new battery and an annual service β’ Clean CarFax Named after Pierre Veyron, the co-driver of the winning Type 57C Bugatti in the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Bugatti Veyron instantly assumed the mantle of the worldβs greatest supercar upon its introduction in 2005. It was the fastest production car ever, and the most expensive, its sticker price exceeding $1.8 million when this blue-on-white example was built in October 2008. Based on the Bentley Hunaudieres concept vehicle unveiled at the 1999 Geneva Auto Salon and built at the Bugattiβs Molsheim factory in France, the Veyronβs design team was led by former Volkswagen Design Chief Hartmut Warkuss, with Jozef Kaban and Wolfgang Schreiber handling exterior and engineering respectively. Their finished product shook the motoring world with a top speed of more than 250 MPH at the Volkswagen test track and later reproduced by BBCβs popular βTop Gearβ TV show. Central to the Veyronβs stunning speed is its brilliantly engineered W-16 engine, a 1,001 HP titan bristling with 4 turbochargers, each cooled by an air-to-liquid intercooler. To quench the Veyronβs tremendous thermal output, the W-16 is cooled by no fewer than three radiators; three more serve duty as heat exchangers, and four more are dedicated to the air conditioning, engine oil, differential and the ultra-heavy-duty 7-speed paddle-shifted DSG transmission. Despite the Veyronβs hefty 4,162-pound curb weight, it leaps from standstill with launch control engaged to reach 60 MPH in a mind-boggling 2.6 seconds and completes the quarter mile in 10.2 seconds at a blistering 143 MPH, with another 110 MPH still in hand. At full warp speed, the Veyronβs hydraulically actuated suspension lowers it to within 2.6 inches of the pavement; front air diffusers open and the rear spoiler simultaneously rises to turn the onrushing air into 770 pounds of downforce, rendering the car incredibly stable at top speed. Naturally, the Veyronβs carbon-fiber-reinforced silicon-carbide brakes are more than adequate, generating 1.3 g of deceleration. The Veyronβs unequalled performance is matched with lavish interior appointments that include premium leather upholstery, brushed-alloy trim and controls, Airsystem climate controls, power seats and windows and a Burmester premium sound system, all part of the worldβs most exclusive driving experience. https://www.mecum.com/lots/303124/2008-bugatti-veyron-16-4/
