No mere throwback, the Boxster RS 60 Spyder commemorated the silver Porsche Type 718 RS60 Spyder piloted by Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien to Porsche’s first overall victory at the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring. While Porsche is globally dominant in racing today, that landmark victory was earned against the odds in a hard-fought race, with Herrmann and Gendebien eventually finishing the grueling 12-hour event nine laps ahead of the second-place Porsche 718 RS60 Spyder co-driven for Brumos Porsche by Bob Holbert and Roy Scheckter. Appropriately, the special new Boxster was built along a limited run of 1,960 examples. The liquid-cooled 3.4L flat 6-cylinder engine was uprated to 303 HP, eight more than the Boxster S. A Tiptronic S automatic transmission with manual mode delivers the power, and handling response is enhanced by Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Visual cues include the SportDesign front valance, black windshield surround, Bose sound system, GT silver metallic-finished center console and silver seatbelts. Other highlights include power rack-and-pinion steering, an active rear spoiler, automatic climate control, power windows, cruise control, headrests with embossed Porsche crests, Parking Assist and brilliant Bi-Xenon headlights with washers. For stopping power, 4-wheel disc brakes feature red calipers and reside behind 19-inch SportDesign wheels.
