    Packard 1107 Club Sedan, 1934

Chassis No.: 73630 • Exterior: Yellow • Interior: Brown • 1 of 986 Packard 12 cylinder built in 1934 • Originally delivered new to the Al Capone syndicate • Modern radial tires • Older restoration Marketing for Packard in 1934 noted that “to marry in haste is to repent at leisure,” a statement affirming the need to wisely select the Packard brand over others. We have no way of knowing if such penitence was part of the original ownership of this particular car, which allegedly went directly to Al Capone’s crime syndicate when delivered. Capone’s notoriety had resulted in his novel conviction on tax-evasion charges three years prior in an era before the IRS became infamous for its pursuits throughout the monied classes of America, criminal or otherwise. This beautiful car is no mere Packard, if such a thing exists. It is one of the 986 V-12 examples built in 1934 and part of the 11th Series, many of which feature custom coachwork. The 11th Series cars were distinguished by their tall radiators, long hoods and wide cowls, cues unique to this model year, which would serve as the final season of swept fender lines before the advent of streamlining in 1935. The 1107 Series models featured no fewer than 11 production body designs, of which No. 736 denoted the Twelve Club Sedan in 4-door trim. The “quiet whisper” V-12 engine displaced 445 CI and was rated at 160 HP, with the most notably upgrade for 1934 being a redesign of the hydraulic valve silencers. This example rides on a 142-inch wheelbase, with five-passenger accommodation and trunk space enough for the crew’s fading moonshine business, or Tommy guns … but we digress. Painted in a gorgeous light tan, the car showcases the Packard legacy of this model with its Packard Twelve emblems, dual side-mounted spares, luggage rack, winged hood ornamentation and carefully positioned chrome work. Inside is plush seating, floor-mounted gear shift and round-faced gauge cluster in a tasteful dash layout. The only updating change is the radial-design whitewalls, of which we think the mob would have approved. Wonderful regardless of its background, here is a Packard worthy of its namesake. https://www.mecum.com/lots/300269/1934-packard-1107-club-sedan/
