Why Hamilton Drove a Dusty F40

What would you do if you discovered a Ferrari F40 that had spent more than 30 years sitting untouched in storage? Keep the dust and preserve every trace of its past, or bring it back to life? Hamilton chose to drive it. That decision says a lot about what this particular F40 meant to him. He wasn’t looking for a flawless auction piece or another exotic hidden away in a collection. He wanted a car with history — and, more importantly, one he could actually enjoy on the road. The restoration revealed an extraordinary detail: the engine was stamped with the number 44, Hamilton’s racing number and a figure closely tied to his career. Then came Monza. Instead of arriving in a modern Ferrari, Hamilton brought the F40, turning it into a moving tribute to Ferrari’s heritage. Even the way he arrived was carefully styled to make the moment feel truly special. Could there be a more appropriate Ferrari for the brand’s most recognizable driver? And would you have restored this F40, or preserved its 30+ years of dust? Tell us below: should classics this rare be driven?

    Ferrari F40, 1990

Chassis No.: ZFFMN34A7L0086498 Auction: Monterey 2023 Auction date: August 19, 2023 Lot No.: S96 $2,530,000 | Sold • Odometer: 3,417 miles • Engine: V-8 • Transmission: Manual • Exterior: Rosso Corsa • Interior: Rosso • Odometer reads 3,417 miles • The Ferrari F40 was the final supercar commissioned by Enzo Ferrari • 1 of 213 produced for the United States • Coachwork by Scaglietti • Twin turbocharged 2,936cc DOHC V-8 engine • 478 HP at 7,000 RPM • 5-speed manual transmission • Ferrari Classiche certified, Red Book included • Original Schedoni luggage • Tool kit Firmly ranking high on many “best car” lists from introduction, Ferrari’s F40 was the inspired byproduct of a program initiated in 1984 to develop an improved 288 GTO for FIA Group B rally competition to counter the threat posed by Porsche’s upcoming 959. However, the lethal nature of this escalating automotive arms race ultimately spurred Group B’s cancellation in 1986, before the high-tech gladiators from Maranello and Stuttgart could face each other for supremacy. Undeterred, Ferrari continued work on the five 288 GTO Evoluzione development cars already built and redeveloped them into hyper-performance 200 MPH road cars in celebration of the marque’s landmark 40th anniversary. Introduced at Frankfurt in 1987 and named F40, the new Ferrari’s body was a design tour de force by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti. Bodies were produced by longstanding Ferrari coachbuilder Scaglietti, blending aggressively functional lines with incredibly efficient aerodynamics that yielded an ultra-low 0.34 drag coefficient. Specifications of the F40 remain current, even by today’s standards. Its tubular spaceframe chassis mounted fully independent underpinnings including double wishbones, coilover shock absorbers and ventilated disc brakes with 4-piston calipers at each corner. Kevlar, carbon-fiber and aluminum body panels lowered weight, while rigidity was three times better than that of the 288 GTO. Paired with a 5-speed manual rear transaxle, the F40’s 2.9L DOHC V-8 engine delivered 478 HP at 7,000 RPM with twin IHI turbochargers, twin water-cooled Behr intercoolers, Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection and U.S.-mandated catalytic converters. Performance was described in a period Car and Driver test as “… a mix of sheer terror and raw excitement.” Published credentials included zero to 62 MPH acceleration in 4.7 seconds and a 199 MPH top speed, capably harnessed with equally impressive handling and braking. While initial estimates called for about 400 examples, market demand was so overwhelming—even with the car’s price tag of some $400,000 U.S. dollars—that 1,315 F40s were built when production ended in 1991. American enthusiasts, however, had to wait until 1990 for the chance to own one, and just 213 F40s were allocated to the U.S. market, including this compelling, Ferrari Classiche-certified example. Offered with the odometer reading just 3,417 miles, this 1990 Ferrari F40 features a Rosso Corsa exterior finish with a Rosso Ferrari interior. The Ferrari is motivated by a twin-turbocharged 2936cc DOHC V-8 engine capable of pushing 478 HP through the 5-speed manual transmission at 7,000 RPM. The offering of this rare U.S.-specification F40 includes original Schedoni luggage, a tool kit and the all-important Red Book issued by Ferrari Classiche. Extremely rare, this 1990 Ferrari F40 is a supercar icon and historic as the last new Ferrari model commissioned by Ferrari Founder Enzo Ferrari. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1085258/1990-ferrari-f40/

    Ferrari F40, 1989

Chassis No.: ZFFGJ34B000080727 Auction: Monterey 2015 Auction date: August 15, 2015 Lot No.: S77 $1,265,000 | Sold • Exterior: Red • Interior: Red • European spec car • Believed to be 8,800 kilometers • Twin turbocharged 2936cc/478 HP DOHC V-8 engine • Weber-Marelli fuel injection • 5-speed manual gearbox • Independent double-wishbone suspension • 4-wheel disc brakes • Tools • Workshop manual • CAN NOT BE REGISTERED IN CALIFORNIA Built to celebrate 40 years of thoroughbred racing and road machines carrying his name, the Ferrari F40 was introduced to the world by Il Commendatore himself in a dramatic press conference at Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters. The date was July 21, 1987, and the F40 has since assumed an esteemed place as the last new model before Enzo Ferrari’s passing the following year. A direct development of the 288 GTO and the Evoluzione targeted for Group B rallying, the F40 was a mesmerizing sight. Its form was dominated by a high rear wing, but the automotive press were unanimous in their approval. “To put it in perspective,” wrote Road & Track Executive Editor Dennis Simanaitis, “recall how jarring the Testarossa first looked. By contrast, the F40 looks immediately right.” It also delivered on Ferrari’s promise to make it “the best in the world,” boasting a top speed of almost 200 MPH on the strength of leading edge technology borrowed from Ferrari’s Formula One program. The tube steel chassis and independent suspension were conventional, but extensive use of carbon fiber, Nomex and Kevlar in the body and cockpit resulted in considerable weight savings. Visible beneath a vented Plexiglas rear window, the F40’s 2,936CC DOHC V-8 bristled with twin intercooled IHI turbochargers, sequential electronic fuel injection, Marelli-Weber four-coil ignition and “a wastegate that would look right at home in an F1 engine bay.” This surprisingly versatile powerplant could stir from docile to ferocious in the blink of an eye, working through a 5-speed gearbox to turn gigantic Z-rated Pirelli P700s mounted on modular alloy wheels bearing the distinctive Ferrari five-spoke centers. The driver’s environs answered customer criticism that Ferraris were becoming too plush. In addition to the typical padded steering wheel, hooded instrument cluster and gated shifter, driver appointments included oversized racing pedals, sliding Plexiglas side windows and form-fitting carbon-fiber seats with six-point racing harnesses. Carpeting was non-existent, replaced by painted carbon-fiber panels, air conditioning being the sole concession to comfort. As the last Ferrari road car produced under Enzo Ferrari’s direct leadership, the F40 is one of the most celebrated high-performance automobiles ever built, an important link in the Ferrari supercar lineage that includes the 288 GTO, F50, Enzo LaFerrari. This European-specification F40 registers 8,917 kilometers or 5,540 miles. Offered with a complete set of tools and workshop manual, it is a superb specimen that promises to deliver the world-beating performance and style guaranteed by its creator almost 30 years ago. https://www.mecum.com/lots/219894/1989-ferrari-f40/
