Rolls-Royce Phantom V James Young Sedanca de Ville, 1965

Chassis No.: 5VE21 $121,000 | Sold • Odometer: 32,822 miles • Engine: V-8 • Transmission: Automatic • Exterior: Ivory White/Royal Blue • Interior: White/Blue • Body: Sedanca De Ville • Unique coachwork by James Young on a Phantom V chassis • James Young produced 11 open-drive Sedanca de Ville bodies for Phantom V chassis • This example was the only car built to the Sedanca de Ville version of design number PV15 • Formal roofline • True 7-passenger interior • Engine no. E10PV • Body no. 9053 • Shown at the 1965 Earls Court Motor Show • Formerly owned by renowned enthusiasts Dr. Erle Heath and Dr. Samuel Scher • 6.2L V-8 engine • Automatic transmission • Build sheet • Rolls-Royce Foundation records • California’s Behring Collection book • Known ownership history The Rolls-Royce Phantom V, introduced in 1959, was both enormous and enormously exclusive. The first of the V-8-powered limousines rode on a 144-inch wheelbase with bodies measuring 238 inches. Just 832 were built through 1968, attracting an exclusive clientele from kings of countries and the one and only king of rock ‘n’ roll, to despots, dictators and counter-culture icons and pop stars including John Lennon, Liberace and Elton John. When a second Phantom V joined Queen Elizabeth’s royal fleet in 1961, the base price was a prodigious $27,617. Yet, even within that rarefied realm there was further exclusivity and near infinite variation, as each was individually handbuilt. The firm of James Young, established in 1863, built just 217 Phantom V’s, which were characterised by flowing lines that were unquestionably more graceful than the chunkier-looking models built for ceremonial duty by Mulliner and Park Ward. This James Young Sedanca de Ville is one of just 11 built with the open-drive chauffeur’s compartment, which harks back to an earlier era of automotive elegance. Moreover, it is only Phantom V Sedanca built to James Young’s PV15 model designation, featuring the closed limousine’s more formal roofline and true seven-passenger accommodation with forward-facing occasional seats. A true luxury statement of its era, this Phantom V is simply unique. Accompanied by a build sheet and Rolls-Royce Foundation records, it was exhibited at the 1965 Earls Court London Motor Show, before being delivered to its first owner in its striking livery featuring the faux cane embellishment to the Ivory White and Royal Blue paint scheme. As a 1965 car, it features the more powerful 6230cc/200 HP V-8, as fitted to the Silver Cloud III, delivering effortless 100 MPH performance; it also possesses the latter’s quad-headlamp frontal treatment. The appointments, including the rear leather seating, dual front and rear air-conditioning, picnic tables and fitted bar are just some of the features appreciated by distinguished former owners, including noted enthusiasts Dr. Erle Heath and Dr. Samuel Scher. It is both the last word in opulence and the last chapter of James Young’s celebrated history, for with the demise of the Phantom V in 1968, the illustrious coachbuilder also closed its doors for lack of suitable chassis on which to exercise the art, craft and flair which had been its hallmark for over a century. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1095240/1965-rolls-royce-phantom-v-james-young-sedanca-de-ville/
