Described by its maker as a 'Sports Activity Coupé', the X6 is classed as a luxury 'crossover' vehicle, combining the attributes of an SUV (generous ground clearance, four-wheel drive, all-weather ability, large wheels and tyres, etc) with coupé-like styling. The original X6 M used a development of the top-of-the-range 4.4-litre V8, which located its twin turbochargers between the cylinder banks, being the first production car engine to feature this 'hot vee' layout. As installed in the X6 M, this state-of-the-art power unit produced a maximum of 547bhp with a mighty 502lb/ft of torque available all the way from 1,500 to 5,650rpm. The X6's introduction marked the first appearance of BMW's new 'Dynamic Performance Control' (DPC) system, which works with its xDrive all-wheel drive. DPC is a drive train and chassis control system that works to regulate traction by actively distributing drive forces across the rear axle. Torque is distributed not only between the front and rear wheels (xDrive) but also from side to side at the rear by means of a clutch pack and gears rather than the brakes as in a conventional system, the result being superior balance. Other notable features of the original X6 M model included a six-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission; lowered suspension; upgraded brakes; and 20" alloy wheels shod with 'run flat' tyres. The second generation X6 was launched at the 2014 Paris Motor Show featuring a new eight-speed automatic transmission and a slightly larger boot, while the new X6 M came with 567bhp on tap, 20 horsepower more than its predecessor.
