Bentley sought innovation as they looked to separate themselves from other luxury car builders of the day. The Mark VI was that innovation. Not only was it the first model to be built with all-steel coachwork, it was also the first car that was fully assembled and completed at their factory. Bentley produced a limited run of Mark VI chassis without bodies, all of which were designated for custom coachwork companies such as Park Ward, Bentley’s in-house coachwork company. This right-hand drive example is a one-of-a-kind Mark VI Drophead Coupe with a body built by Mulliners of Birmingham. Mulliners was a coachbuilding family with roots in the industry dating back to 1760, building coaches for the Royal Mail in Northampton. Mulliners of Birmingham, just like Park Ward, was purchased by Rolls-Royce to exclusively supply bodies for Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The exterior of the car is a French inspired design with rear wheel skirts, square-weave Haartz Stayfast top and tonneau cover, a split windscreen and rear deck design. Finished in tri-tone gray, the car displays maroon accents, iconic ‘Flying B’ hood mascot, singular center driving light and painted wheels with chrome hubcaps. The seats and door panels are upholstered in vat-dyed Burgundy leather and the floor finished with contrasting Grey carpets. The Fiddleneck wood grain dashboard incorporates built-in pull-out trays and has matching wood-trimmed window sills. Amply powered by Bentley’s excellent 4.6L big bore inline-6 engine mated to a floor-shifted 4-speed manual transmission, it incorporates hydraulic front power brakes and mechanical rear brakes. Winner of Best in Class and Best of Show at the Niello Concours at Serrano, California in 2014, the car also won Most Improved Bentley or Rolls-Royce at a Northern California Rolls-Royce Owner's Club event and is offered with all trophies. https://www.mecum.com/lots/260000/1952-bentley-mark-vi-drophead-coupe/
